WINTER PARK, Fla. (November 24, 2006) ' The No.
20 Rollins women's basketball team had their regular season winning
streak stopped at 30 by Lake Superior State on Thursday, falling
59-44 in the opening game of the Rollins College Thanksgiving
Classic.
The Tars (3-1) shot just 26 percent from the floor while
committing a season high 26 turnovers. The Lakers (1-2) turned the
ball over 23 times in the contest, but were boosted by 45 percent
shooting from the field.
Senior Larissa McDonough paced the Rollins attack for the third
time this season, netting 17 points behind 3-4 shooting from beyond
the arc. Junior Jennifer Musgrove was also 3-4 from long range and
racked up 12 points and six rebounds. Sophomore Jessica Barker led
Rollins on the glass, pulling down a team best seven rebounds.
Mandi Johnson led Lake Superior State with 16 points and a game
high nine rebounds. Monica Rehmann chipped in 12 points while
Jaclyn Armstrong, Ronlea Peterson and Jill Walton each added
six.
The Tars were beat on the boards for the first time this season
with the Lakers winning the battle on the glass 36-35.
The winless Lakers came out of the gate gunning, knocking down
3-4 three-pointers to open up a 15-10 lead seven minutes in.
Rollins then went on a 9-2 run to take a two point lead after a
Musgrove steal and lay-up with just under 10 minutes to play.
Rehmann answered with a trey on the Lakers next trip down the floor
to spark a 14-0 spurt, giving the visitors a 29-19 lead with five
minutes in the half. Shalyn Beauchamp connected from long range in
the waning minutes to give Lake State a 34-21 halftime
advantage.
Early in the second half, McDonough tallied back to back
three-pointers and cut the lead to four, 38-34 with 15 minutes on
the clock, but the Tars again caught a cold streak and the Lakers
stretched their lead back to double-digits. Lake Superior State
shut the door with 6:25 remaining when Peterson and Walton drained
back to back three-pointers and put the visitors up 17, 53-36.
Both Rollins and Lake Superior State will be back in action on
Saturday, November 25 in day two of the Rollins College
Thanksgiving Classic. Rollins will take on Michigan Tech at 2 p.m.;
followed by Tampa and Lake Superior State at 4 p.m. Fans can listen
