WINTER PARK, Fla. (November 18, 2006) ' The
Rollins women's basketball team continued its season-opening
success with a 64-58 win over Puerto Rico-Bayamon Saturday
afternoon at Warden Arena.' The Tars, ranked 15th in the NCAA
Division II Bulletin Preseason Poll, improved to 2-0 with the win,
and P.R.-Bayamon's loss gives them a record of 0-1 to open the
season.
Rollins had three players score in double digits; junior forward
Jennifer Catti netted 16, sophomore guard Jennifer Dyer added 12,
and senior forward Larissa McDonough scored 10.' McDonough also led
the team with 10 rebounds, giving her a double-double.' Junior
guard Jennifer Musgrove dished out a game-high six assists and
notched a team-leading two steals.
The Cowgirls received 22 points from Carla Escalera and 19 from
Pamela Rosado.' Rosado was five for nine from behind the arc, and
her ten rebounds and five assists led the team in those
categories.
P.R.-Bayamon jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the game's first minute
and a half, but the Tars were able to respond quickly, tying the
game at seven two minutes later.' In the first half the Cowgirls
led by as many as six points, but Rollins stayed tough and gained
the lead with five minutes left thanks in part to a 10-0 run.' The
Tars led 34-33 going into halftime.
The Cowgirls stayed in the game through much of the second half,
but a three-pointer by Dyer at the 8:55 mark gave the Tars the lead
for good.' The largest scoring margin of the game happened with six
minutes remaining when Catti scored a layup off an assist by
Rachael Workman.
Rollins held the shooting advantage from the field (39.1% to
P.R.-Bayamon's 32.3%) and three point territory (35.0% to 22.7%),
but the Cowgirls outdid the Tars at the free throw line (61.9% to
50.0%).' Rollins also won the rebound battle 49-40.
The Tars will go on the road for the first time this Tuesday,
November 21 when they travel to St. Augustine, Fla. for a game
against non-conference opponent Flagler College.' Tipoff is
scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
