WINTER PARK, Fla. (October 4, 2006) ' The 18th
ranked Rollins men's soccer team rolled to a 3-1 victory over Nova
Southeastern on Wednesday at Barker Family Stadium.' The Tars now
stand at 10-2 overall and 4-1 in the Sunshine State Conference, and
the Sharks dropped to 6-4-1, 2-1-1.
Rollins midfielders Juan Kusnir and Jon Gruenewald connected on
a free kick in the 16th minute for the game's first goal.'
Gruenewald took the kick near the right sideline in the Sharks'
defensive end, and Kusnir was in position to head it past Nova
Southeastern goalkeeper Jarod Rennick for the goal.' That would be
it for the first half, as the Tars outshot their opponents 12-5 in
the game's first 45 minutes.
The teams battled to a stalemate well into the second half, but
in the 76th minute defender Eric Vergati overlapped midfielder
Leslie Osei to received a pass near the top of the penalty area on
his way to the Tars' second goal.' Michael Aronski won a ball in
the air on the right sideline just nine minutes later, and it
squirted up to Christopher Chafin on his way to a breakaway
score.
Frazer Siddall starred in goal for the Tars, saving six shots.'
The Tars defense was solid all game except for one lapse in the
89th minute in which Greg Kagan scored on an assist from Anton
Siedlitzki to prevent Rollins from keeping the clean sheet.' The
defensive line of Jack Clifford, Matthew Gowan, Anthony Santiago,
and Vergati limited the Sharks to 12 shots and seven shots on
goal.' The Tars finished the game with 24 shots, eight of which
were on goal.' Rennick saved five shots between the posts for Nova
Southeastern.
Kusnir's goal was his seventh of the year, Chafin's his fourth,
and Vergati his third.' Gruenewald and Osei each picked up their
10th assists of the year, and Aronski's assist was his third.
The Tars will travel to Eckerd on Saturday, October 7 for an SSC
