(October 31, 2006) ' The Rollins Tars overwhelmed
the Saint Leo Lions 3-0 (30-26, 30-28, 30-27) on Tuesday evening at
Warden Arena. Rollins previously lost to Saint Leo 3-1 on September
29, 2006.
The Tars were led
by the offensive powerhouse hitting of outside hitter Stephanie
Nichols, middle blocker Christina Reinders and outside hitter Piper
Young who all tallied 12 kills each.
Libero Kim Cline
totaled an imposing 16 digs in the three games and setter Lacey
Malarky added 45 assists.
Down 6-1 in the
first game, Rollins fought back with the help of four kills from
Reinders, two a piece from Nichols and Lorena Orlandini and one
kill from Young. The Tars brought the score to 18-18 and the
offense pushed to a Game 1 victory 30-26.
In Game 2, the
Tars built a solid 13-7 lead over the Lions, but Saint Leo would
not go down quietly in the second game. The Lions fought back with
kills from outside hitter Audrey Starkebaum, middle blocker Rachel
Taylor, outside hitter Erin Oberlin and middle blocker Emily Frey
to bring the score to 28-28. A service error from outside hitter
Chelesa Armer brought the score to 29-28 in favor of the Tars.
Reinders ended the second game with a kill (30-28).
Leading Saint Leo
by five in the third game, 27-22, the Lions attempted a comeback.
Three straight errors by Rollins gave Saint Leo a chance with the
score 28-26. Young sealed the victory with two kills in another
clutch performance for the Tars (30-27).
The Tars (18-12,
6-8) will face the Eckerd College Tritons (20-11, 7-6) at home on
Friday, November 3 at 7:00 p.m.
