ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (October 1, 2006) ' The
Rollins volleyball team won the first game, but dropped the next
three straight and fell to Eckerd College 3-1 on Sunday. The Tars
won 30-25 in the opener, but were shutout the rest of the way,
30-16, 30-25 and 30-28. The defeat gives the Tars three straight
losses for the first time since October 2004.
Stephanie Nichols posted a double-double to lead the Rollins
(11-6, 3-3 SSC) attack. She totaled 12 kills on the day while also
gathering 10 digs, two aces and three blocks. Lorena Orlandini had
a solid day on the court, racking up 13 kills and nine digs. Sarah
Schneider led the Rollins defensively, going for 15 digs with Lacey
Malarky scoring 36 assists.
Lydee Benoit
totaled 21 kills to lead host Eckerd (12-7, 2-4 SSC).
That Tars and
Tritons battled out a very close game one with Rollins holding a
17-12 lead midway through. Eckerd then rattled off a 9-4 run to
knot the score at 21 all. After a few back and forth plays, the
Tars stepped it up and came out on top 30-25.
Game two was a
different story as the Tritons jumped all over the Tars from the
opening serve and won 30-16. In the third game, Rollins tied the
score 10-10, but fell into a 20-13 hole and were unable to recover,
losing 30-25. The Tars had a chance in game three, tying the score
at 26-26, but once again didn't have an answer for the Tritons and
fell 30-28.
Rollins will look
to bounce back on Thursday, October 5 at top ranked Tampa/>/>
before heading south to clash with Nova Southeastern and Lynn on
the weekend.
