TAMPA, Fla. (January 18, 2006) ' The Rollins College women's basketball team set a new school record on Wednesday night when they defeated conference foe Tampa 71-58. The victory was the Tars' 14th consecutive victory to open the season, which breaks the old school record of 13-0 set twice, the latest coming in 1999-2000. The 14-0 Tars now have a solid hold of first place in the Sunshine State Conference while the second place Spartans fall to 11-5 overall and 3-2 in the conference.

'

Senior forward Joslyn Giles (Winter Haven, Fla.) once again paced the Tars with 14 points while freshman guard Jennifer Dyer (Wake Forest, N.C.) added 13. Junior forward Larissa McDonough (Ormond Beach, Fla.) led the Tars with a game high nine rebounds and tied her career high with four blocks. Sophomore guard Jennifer Musgrove (Palm Bay, Fla.) continued her steady ways and set a new career high with seven assists. Tampa was led on the score sheet by sophomore center Shaneisha Walton with 15 points, while Erica Woodard grabbed a game high 11 rebounds.

'

The Tars came out of the blocks with a victory in mind and hit three treys in the first six minutes to go up early 13-8. The Spartans then went on a 6-1 run to tie the game at 14 with 11:34 to play in the first half. The two teams went back and forth on the scoreboard throughout the first half, with the Tars going up by as many as seven only to see the Spartans battle back to tie the game. Dyer scored all 13 of her points in the first half including a run of seven consecutive points in a span of two and half minutes and her three pointer with 1:22 to play in the half gave the Tars a seven point advantage. The Spartans then proceeded to finish the half on a 5-0 run to cut the Tars half-time advantage to a single basket.

'

As has been the case in most of the Tars' 14 victories, the second half is where the Tars put the pressure on the opposing teams and wear them down. The Spartans were able to stay shot for shot with Rollins to open the half, cutting the Tars lead to one with 11:22 remaining in the game, only to see the Tars go on a 25-13 run to close out the game. In that run, Giles led the Tars with eight points and senior guard Sally Johnston (Winter Springs, Fla.) added six.

'

On the night, Rollins out-rebounded the Spartans 43-37 and held the Spartans to a meager 25.8% from the field (8-31) in the second half. The Tars shot 41.1% (24-58) from the field while forcing the Spartans into 13 turnovers.

'

The Tars will look to continue their impressive winning streak on Saturday, January 21, when they travel to Miami Shores, Fla. to do battle with the Barry Buccaneers. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
