Offense Explodes in Drubbing Over PR Rio Piedras

MELBOURNE, Fla. (November 26, 2005) ' The Rollins College women's basketball team improved to 6-0 on the season after a successful Thanksgiving tournament in Melbourne, Fla. The Tars defeated Puerto Rico-Mayaguez on Friday afternoon 65-38 and then returned to Melbourne on Saturday to defeat Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras (0-5) 101-45. Leading the way for the Tars was senior Joslyn Giles (Winter Haven, Fla.) with 16 points and freshman Jessica Barker (Orange City, Fla.) with 13 points and eight rebounds. For their effort, both Giles and Barker were named to the Thanksgiving All-Classic team.

Rollins and Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras met for the first time this season last Wednesday evening in Winter Park. In a tightly called game, where 55 fouls were called, the Jerezanas were able to keep the Tars in check and held the score to 69-37. In the rematch on Saturday afternoon, the Tars were able to play their up-tempo game, which the Jerezanas could not match.

During the first half, Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras kept the game close and with 11:51 remaining on the clock took a one point lead 14-13. The Tars shooting finally began to connect and the Tars went on a 34-10 run to finish out the first half. At the break, the Tars were up 47-24, led by Barker's nine points.

The second half saw the Tars pull away, going up by as many as 61 points. Over a span of almost 11 minutes in the second half, the Tars held the Jerezanas to only five points (two free throws and one three pointer) while scoring 24 points themselves. Giles scored nine of her 16 in the second half while sophomore Rachael Workman (Northampton, Mass.) added seven.

All 12 Tars found their way onto the scoreboard in the game, with Workman and sophomore Jennifer Musgrove (Palm Bay, Fla.) scoring 12 apiece and senior Sally Johnston (Winter Springs, Fla.) adding 11 points. The Tars reached the free throw line a season high 53 times and connected on 31 (.585) and out rebounded the Jerezanas 58-27.

The Tars will return to Winter Park to take on Flagler College on Wednesday, November 30. Game time at Warden Arena is set for 5:30 p.m.
