MELBOURNE,
Fla. (November 25, 2005) ' The Rollins College women's basketball
team traveled to Melbourne, Fla. to take part in the Florida Tech
Thanksgiving Classic where they matched up against their season
opening opponent Puerto Rico-Mayaguez. The Tars came out victorious
for the second time this season, winning 65-38. The win improves
the Tars record to 5-0 on the season while the Janes fall to
0-6.

Leading the way for the Tars were
seniors Joslyn Giles (Winter Haven, Fla.) and Randi Weiss
(Kissimmee, Fla.), who both scored 13
points in the game. Weiss and freshman Jessica Barker
(Orange City, Fla.) both had career
nights on the boards grabbing 9 rebounds apiece, as the Tars
outrebounded the Janes 53-27.

In
the season opening game, the Tars easily defeated the Janes 96-49.
Tonight's game was much closer as the Janes played more aggressive
and were able to shut the Tars down in the stretch, allowing only
three field goals in the last 11 minutes of the game. During that
stretch, the Tars found themselves on the free throw line often and
went 14-24.

The
first half saw the Janes keep the score close, as their tough
defense put pressure on the Tars. With 14:15 remaining in the first
half, the Janes cut the Tars lead to one after a three-pointer by
junior Aixanell Santos. The Tars then went on a run of their own,
pulling ahead by as many as 16 with 1:23 to go in the first half.
Barker started the run for the Tars, hitting three jumpers in a
three minute span. At halftime, the Tars had pulled the lead to
36-23.

The
second half saw the Janes try to match the pace of the Tars, only
to fall short in the long run. Both teams went 6-25 (.240) from the
field in the second half, but the Tars added 17-29 (.586) from the
line, while the Janes only went to the line three times in the
second half (2-3, .667).
'
Rico-Mayaguez
was led by Santos, who had a team leading 15 points and seven
rebounds.
'
The
Tars will return to Melbourne, Fla. on Saturday, November 26, for a
rematch with Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras. Game time is set for 2:00
p.m.
