MELBOURNE, Fla. (November 25, 2005) ' The Rollins College women's basketball team traveled to Melbourne, Fla. to take part in the Florida Tech Thanksgiving Classic where they matched up against their season opening opponent Puerto Rico-Mayaguez. The Tars came out victorious for the second time this season, winning 65-38. The win improves the Tars record to 5-0 on the season while the Janes fall to 0-6.

'

Leading the way for the Tars were seniors Joslyn Giles (Winter Haven, Fla.) and Randi Weiss (Kissimmee, Fla.), who both scored 13 points in the game. Weiss and freshman Jessica Barker (Orange City, Fla.) both had career nights on the boards grabbing 9 rebounds apiece, as the Tars outrebounded the Janes 53-27.

'

In the season opening game, the Tars easily defeated the Janes 96-49. Tonight's game was much closer as the Janes played more aggressive and were able to shut the Tars down in the stretch, allowing only three field goals in the last 11 minutes of the game. During that stretch, the Tars found themselves on the free throw line often and went 14-24.

'

The first half saw the Janes keep the score close, as their tough defense put pressure on the Tars. With 14:15 remaining in the first half, the Janes cut the Tars lead to one after a three-pointer by junior Aixanell Santos. The Tars then went on a run of their own, pulling ahead by as many as 16 with 1:23 to go in the first half. Barker started the run for the Tars, hitting three jumpers in a three minute span. At halftime, the Tars had pulled the lead to 36-23.

'

The second half saw the Janes try to match the pace of the Tars, only to fall short in the long run. Both teams went 6-25 (.240) from the field in the second half, but the Tars added 17-29 (.586) from the line, while the Janes only went to the line three times in the second half (2-3, .667).

'

Rico-Mayaguez was led by Santos, who had a team leading 15 points and seven rebounds.

'

The Tars will return to Melbourne, Fla. on Saturday, November 26, for a rematch with Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
