WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 24, 2026) – Rollins bid farewell to the regular season Friday afternoon with a sweep of the Washington & Lee Generals. The outstanding performance was preluded by a senior day ceremony in which
Fabian Gusic,
Richard Stoiberer and
Eltavious Johnson were honored for their contributions to the program and the entire Rollins College community.
It was an emotionally charged warm-up for the Tars, fresh off festivities in recognition of three stand-up men who have changed the program for the better in their time donning the uniform. A touching tribute was dreamed up by head coach
Jay Friedman, who requested audio clips from each member of the team describing the value of what these three men meant to them. The sentiments echoed over the loudspeakers as community members gathered around to cheer on each senior as they entered the spotlight. Shortly thereafter, it was showtime.
The seniors did not disappoint, each of them etching wins in the doubles column. First, it was Gusic, who alongside fellow native man
Mo Anterist cruised to a 6-1 win from the middle. Then, after trading initial games from the top, Stoiberer and
Pete Tran helped award the Tars with the first point behind a 6-4 result. The men, playing with a sense of passion entering the locker room, would only intensify their efforts on the singles side after the intermission.
The Traveling Wilburys would have been proud of the performance by the Tars end of the line today.
Pietro Cappellaro maintained his poise off a tough doubles bout and steered the ship entirely his direction from court six to start things. Earlier this season, Cappellaro explained his pre-match routine was to get exactly nine hours, five minutes of sleep the night before the match. The restful preparation sure paid dividends today with a 6-0, 6-1 winner.
Across the way, in the West side's finale,
Pete Tran followed the exact same script. Tran's victory put the Tars in prime position to add tally number 18 into the win category.
Mo Anterist answered the call to do just that.
Early in the first set, Anterist and his court four opposer were tied at two games apiece. From that point forward, though, it was all Mo. A 6-2, 6-1 win called the sophomore's name officially sealing the deal on a senior day triumph.
But the veterans still needed to write their names in the winner's circle, and Stoiberer was the first do so. Serving for the match, the senior caught two returns which he countered with powerful forehands. On the second, Richie struck gold with a winner, letting out an emotional "Yeah!" before calmly and humbly removing his cap and meeting the General's court three mate at the net for match regards. It was a fitting end to the Austrian's match, who a short while later was named as a nominee for the Phil Roach Sportsmanship Award, given to a Tars student-athlete who treats others with respect and class at every turn.
Within the span of three seconds (literally) freshman
Lawson Prather fired an nonreturnable serve to write his name in stone for singles win number thirteen. All but one of the first-year standout's victories have come via the top of the line.
Finally, it was only right if a senior was the last to finish on this momentous day. Playing from the East side headline, receiving encouragement from fellow senior
Eltavious Johnson just steps away at the fence, Gusic put an exclamation point on Friday's affair. His untouchable backhand capped a 6-2 win in the second set, ultimately sending Tar fans home with straight set wins across the board. Gusic has just two solo losses on the season, with both happening on the road. His undefeated home slate was split across lines two and three.
Meanwhile, Eltavious, his biggest supporter, and the biggest supporter of any Tar that has stepped foot on the court this season, wraps up his regular season career unblemished across all six lines, home or away.
The story is not finished for this ball club, a fact that will not be lost on anyone who steps foot inside the home locker room. But for today, a day that was meant to celebrate the achievements of the seniors, it was worth slowing down and appreciating all the hard work these men have put in up to this point.
Head coach
Jay Friedman reflected about all the following, including his thoughts on Friday's gritty opponent:
"What a day. I think the Generals are great. They didn't play big-eyed and came out to take it to us in the doubles, we certainly had to grab the sharper tools after the first change over. Really well coached, James and Coach Detwiler are doing a fantastic job and hats off to them. As for the Seniors it's always awkward, love these guys and what we have come to be together but also, it's not the end so we are looking forward to several more matches together. The goal is not the regular season it's what comes next. Reset. All the records are erased, and we play for the championships."
The quest for a title begins next Thursday, April 30
th from Boca Raton. The Tars head south for a date with Embry-Riddle, the six seed in this year's SSC tournament. A 5-2 record in league play earned the Tars a three seed for the postseason duel as Rollins takes aim at their first conference tournament title since 2004. The men's program owns 18 all-time in its storied history, good for second most among all SSC members.
