WINTER PARK, Fla. – Rollins softball completed the series sweep over Barry on Saturday, earning a 13-4 run-rule victory in game one before taking a 3-0 shutout in game two.
Game One – Rollins 13, Barry 4 (5 inn.)
After a quiet first inning, Rollins got to work in the second.
Brooke Theisen opened the frame with a double to right center, and
Madi Carr followed with a double of her own to bring her home for the first run of the day. A sacrifice bunt from
Kaeli Zahradnik moved Carr to third, and
Claire Long delivered an RBI single to give the Tars a 2-0 lead.
The offense broke things open in the third.
Cambrie Todd sparked the rally with a two-out single, and Theisen followed with a walk to put two on. Carr continued her strong day at the plate, driving in another run with her second double of the game. After a pitching change, Zahradnik added a two-RBI hit, and Long followed with another RBI single to extend the lead to 6-0.
Barry answered in the fourth, using two hits and a pair of Rollins miscues to plate four runs and cut into the deficit.
The Tars responded immediately.
Daylin Hejtmanek and
Brianna Perantoni opened the inning with back-to-back singles, and after an out,
Lucy McLogan entered as a pinch runner. Todd executed a squeeze bunt to bring home a run, and Theisen followed with a walk before advancing on an errant throw, allowing another run to score. Carr added yet another RBI in the next at-bat to push the lead to 9-4.
Rollins sealed the game in the fifth.
Jaelyn Joiner reached base and moved into scoring position on a single from Hejtmanek, with a double steal advancing both runners. A throwing error brought in one run, and another miscue later in the inning added a second.
Rachel Matthiesen provided the final swing, launching a walk-off home run to end the game in five innings at 13-4.
Camila Leon-Blanco earned the win in the circle, improving to 9-4 on the season.
Game Two – Rollins 3, Barry 0
Game two opened as a pitcher's duel, with neither team breaking through over the first three innings.
Rollins broke the deadlock in the fourth. With two outs, Todd and Theisen recorded back-to-back singles before Carr drew a walk to load the bases. Zahradnik followed with a full-count walk to force in the first run of the game.
The Tars added to the lead in the fifth.
Makayla Layton reached on a walk, and Hejtmanek and Perantoni followed with base hits to load the bases once again. Matthiesen lifted a sacrifice fly to score Layton, and Todd added another RBI to extend the advantage to 3-0.
Barry managed a hit in both the sixth and seventh innings, but Rollins' defense, backed by
Reese Twiggs in the circle, held firm to secure the shutout victory.
Rollins improves to 24-12 overall and 12-9 in SSC play, while Barry falls to 21-23 (10-11 SSC). The Tars return to action Friday on the road against Tampa, with first pitch set for 6 p.m.
