Tars Erase Eleven Run Deficit in Comback Victory

Rollins defeated Saint Leo 13-12 on Sunday afternoon

SAINT LEO, Fla. (March 1, 2026) - Rollins trailed Saint Leo 12-1 in the fourth inning on Sunday. About two hours later, the Tars had clawed all the way back to hang on for a 13-12 win, sweeping the SSC road series to move to 13-4, 6-0 SSC on the year. The Lions drop to 8-8, 0-6 SSC after the loss.

Saint Leo used three hits and an error in the first inning to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Rollins got one run back in the third when Elvin Figueroa led off with a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a groundout from Joey Rubin

The bottom of the fourth inning was unbelievable for Saint Leo. They sent 15 batters to the plate, tallying ten runs on nine hits while forcing the Tars to shuffle through three different pitchers. By the end of the madness, the Lions held a 12-1 lead.

But the Tars weren't done. They got one run back in the fifth when Mason Elrod ripped a double to the gap to score Mauri Bejarano. After Ryan Taylor delivered a scoreless fifth, the Tars added more in the top of the sixth. With two outs and the bases loaded, Figueroa was hit by a pitch, bringing in Jimmy Thies. Owen Rardin entered the game as a pinch-hitter, and delivered a single to center that plated AJ Barrios and Connor O'Sullivam as well as Figueroa, thanks to a throwing error. The score was 12-6.

Jack Haynes was called in to handle the sixth, and he did just that, stranding a runner on base. Then in the seventh, Rollins was at it again. Jonah DiCocco led off with a single, followed by Matthew Mateo reaching after begin hit by a pitch. A second hit batter loaded the bases, followed by a walk to Barrios, to bring in a run. Next up was Jayden Brown, who launched a grand slam for the second time this weekend, making it a 12-11 ballgame.

Following another blank inning from Haynes, DiCocco led off the eighth inning with a solo home run, the first of his collegiate career, to tie the game at twelve. With two outs in the inning, Rollins earned walks to three straight batters, bringing in the go-ahead run.

AJ Seymour was called on in the eighth, and fired a scoreless frame. Elrod delivered a double to lead off the ninth, but was left stranded. Then in the bottom of the ninth, Seymour was helped by a couple of tremendous plays in left field, as well as a catch at the warning track in right-center to seal the win for the Tars.

Thies collected three hits on the day while scoring twice. Brown was on base twice with four RBI. Barrios reached four times, scored twice and drove in one. Elrod and DiCocco each had two hits off the bench. Jack Haynes earned the win on the mound, with Seymour claiming his second save of the season.

Head coach Jon Sjogren could not have asked for a more exciting way to claim 900 career victories. With his 13th win of the year, he reaches a milestone achieved by only 65 other coaches in the history of NCAA D-II baseball. He currently ranks tenth among active D-II head coaches in career wins.
