LAKELAND, Fla. (May 8, 2025) - It took almost 24 hours, but Florida Southern captured the first game of the final three-game set if the regular season, defeating Rollins 10-2. The game began at 1pm on Thursday, was suspended in the top of the ninth inning, and resumed on Friday at noon. The loss moves Rollins to 29-18 (18-10 SSC) while the Mocs improve to 35-13 (19-9 SSC).
The scoring started in the second inning when a two-out flyball to left was misplayed, allowing a pair of Mocs to come around to score. Rollins fought back in the third, managing one run on a sac fly from
Jeslyn Whitehead. The damage could have been worse, but a bases loaded flyout ended the inning.
Florida Southern struck for four runs in the fifth on just two hits, aided by two walks, two stolen bases, and a sac fly. Another big inning in the eighth added four more runs to the Southern total as they held a 10-1 advantage.
Lightning struck in the area, and hung around long enough that the coaches decided to suspend the game to Friday.
When play resumed,
Jimmy Thies walked, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a groundout to make the final of 10-2.
The Tars managed only four hits in the game.
Corey Zientek scored, drove in a run, and also stole a base to lead the offense. Rollins pitchers didn't do themselves any favors, walking ten batters in the game.
Game two is set to begin 45 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
