Tars Fall to Mavericks in High-Scoring Affair

Colorado Mesa defeated Rollins 20-10 on Sunday

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (April 27, 2025) - Baseball took an early lead in game three against Colorado Mesa, but eventually fell by a 20-10 final score on Sunday. The loss moves the Tars to 27-16 on the season while the #12 Mavericks improve to 33-10.

The Tars came out of the gates hot as the first six batters reached base safely. Michael Furry, Joey Rubin Jeslyn Whitehead, and Mason Wilson all recorded singles followed by RBI walks from Corey Zientek and Jimmy Thies. After a pitching change, Ethan Beal was the seventh straight Tar to reach with a single to center, mkaing it a 4-0 game.

Unfortunately, the Mavericks had an immediate answer. They used three hits, three walks, and a hit batter to tie the game at four. AJ Seymour was called on out of the bullpen with the bases loaded and one out, and was able to retire the next two hitters to get out of the jam.

Colorado Mesa added one in the second and four in the fourth to go up big. Rollins threatened in the fifth with runners on second and third and no one out, but a sac fly from Zientek turned into a double play, killing the momentum of the inning as the score remained 9-5.

Six more runs were added to the Mesa tally in the fifth on five hits, followed by two in the sixth.

The Tars continued to fight, and had a solid inning in the seventh. Whitehead beat out an infield single, stole second, and scored on a Zientek double. After Kyle Singer singled, Stephen Deans followed suit with a knock to plate Zientek. Two batters later, Furry drew a bases loaded walk to score another run before Rubin wrapped up the inning with a single to left that brought home Deans.

Sticking to the script of the game, Mesa answered with a two-run home run in their half of the inning to go up 20-9.

The final run came on a solo home run from Kyle Singer in the eighth inning.

The two teams were close in hits (18-15 in favor of Mesa), but the Tars aided their foe with ten walks and five hit batters. Ten different Tars had a hit, led by Whiethead's three and Zietek's three RBI.

Next up for the Tars is their final home stand of the season. They will face Plam Beach Atlantic on Friday, May 2 with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 pm.
