Tars Let Early Lead Slip

Eckerd defeated Rollins 4-3 on Thursday

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (April 17, 2025) – Fresh off of a dominant win over #2 Tampa, the Rollins softball team packed their bags for a three-game set with the Eckerd Tritons. After drawing first blood, the Tars could not hold on to the lead and dropped the series opener, 4-3. With the loss, the Tars fall to 26-13 on the season while Eckerd improves to 27-15.

Emily MacMullen took to the circle for yet another series opening start, and for the third straight game, the Tars scratched one across the plate first. The run came in the second inning courtesy of Brooke Theisen, with some help from the Tritons. After MacMullen worked a clean 1-2-3 bottom of the first, Theisen led off the second by reaching on an error. She advanced to second on a bad throw, and later scored on another bad throw, attempting to cut her down on the bases while stealing third. Theisen's speed and aggressiveness produced an early lead, one that Rollins would hold for a few innings.

The Tars added two more in the fourth after Grace Germer singled to right. More miscues in the field, though, eventually led to Germer scooting around the bases for a little league homer. The mishaps also helped Cambrie Todd score, who was aboard thanks to a one-out walk when Germer stepped up to the dish.

Eckerd didn't wait long to answer, though. A lead off double in the bottom of the fourth followed by a two run home run pulled the Tritons within one run. Two more would reach in the inning, but MacMullen found her groove again to keep the lead in tact for the Tars.

But Eckerd was not done. One frame later, the Tritons knotted the score at three apiece with an RBI single by Ella Coiner. The base knock was Coiner's third RBI of the day. Again, MacMullen stranded runners to keep things at a stalemate.

After Rollins went down without producing a run in the sixth, Eckerd sensed the momentum and grabbed the lead thanks to consecutive hits to open the bottom half.

Trailing 4-3, the Tars went down in order with their last at-bats, securing a series opening win for the Tritons.

The two teams will meet for two games tomorrow, beginning at 1pm.
