Berger Leads Tars to Sweep of #25 Eagles

Rollins defeated Embry-Riddle 7-1 on Sunday afternoon

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (March 2, 2025) - Baseball completed their sweep of the #25 Embry-Riddle Eagles, thanks to a monster effort on the mound from Nick Berger, and one of the hottest offenses in the country. The Tars move to 12-4 on the year with a 5-1 record in the SSC. The Eagles fall to 8-5, 3-3 SSC.

Rollins opened up the scoring in the second inning. Corey Zientek led off with a single, and moved to second on a Dalton Pyzer walk. Next up was Jimmy Thies, who landed a ball just inside the right field line for a ground-rule double that plated Zientek. Angelo Ramirez was the next up, and his groundball scored Pyzer to make it 2-0.

From the bottom of the second until the end of the fifth, both teams went three up, three down as Berger and Tristan Harley were in control on the mound. Runners finally got on base in the sixth and seventh innings, but no runs resulted.

The Tars, who scored 27 runs in the first two games of the series, rediscovered their offense in the eighth. A hit by pitch, a double from Joey Rubin, and an intentional walk to Jeslyn Whiethead loaded the bases with no outs. Mason Wilson, Stephen Deans, and Pyzer each punched singles into the outfield, resulting in three runs. After a popout, Ramirez drew a bases loaded walk for the fourth run of the inning, making the score 6-0.

Berger cruised through the first seven innings, but ran into a spot of trouble in the eighth. The Eagles put two men on with one out, but Berger did his job with a groundball to short that looked like a double-play ball. However, a throwing error allowed a run to score, spoiling the shutout possibility. Berge then struck out the final batter he saw to put a bow on his day.

In the ninth, Wilson added the final run of the day when he drove in Rubin with a single. AJ Seymour then closed things out with a clean ninth.

Berger's final line read eight innings, two hits, one unearned run, one walk, and five strikeouts. At one point, he retired 16 straight Eagle hitters. He moves to 5-0 on the year, and has a quality start in four of his five outings.

Wilson wrapped up his stellar weekend with three hits, a run, and two RBI. In the three games against Embry-Riddle, he totaled nine hits in 15 at bats (.600 avg), scored four runs, and drove in ten.

Next up for the Tars is a single game against Tiffin University on Thursday, March 6. First pitch against the Dragons is scheduled for 2:00 pm from Alfond Stadium in Winter Park.
