Late Inning Miscues Give Tars Opening Day Win

Rollins defeated UNC Pembroke 4-3 on Friday afternoon

GREENWOOD, SC (February 7, 2025) - Softball earned their first win of the season on Friday afternoon, defeating the UNC Pembroke Braves 4-3.

Rollins put a runner in each of their first two at bats, but could not advance them. In the bottom of the second, Pembroke took the lead on a solo home run from Kaite Hogue. The Braves then threatened once more in the third with the bases loaded and just one out, but starter Reese Twiggs dialed in and used a foul out and groundout to escape unscathed.

The Tars tied things up in the fourth when Cambrie Todd led off with a single. She was pinch-run for by Lucy McLogan, who moved to second on a Jaden Walker hit, and stole third. She would come around to score on a Pembroke error to tie the game.

After scoreless frames in the fourth and fifth, the Braves took the lead again in the sixth. Hogue drove in a run with a double, followed two batters later by a throwing error from Rollins that brought Hogue in to score, putting them up 3-1.

In the final at bat for Rollins, Madi Carr led off with a pinch-hit single. Bri Perantoni followed suit with a pinch-hit knock of her own. A fielder's choice loaded the bases with no one out. Next up was Claire Long, who chopped a ball to second. It looked like a potential double-pla ball, but the second baseman decided not to throw to second, and then sailed her throw to first, allowing two runs to score on the error. A foul out, walk, and infield fly saw the bases loaded with two outs and Marisa Edevane at bat. On the first pitch, Edevane chopped another ball to second that was completely muffed, allowing Taylor Waters to score and give Rollins a 4-3 lead.

Freshman Grace Hautzinger was called on to close things out. She was able to work around a leadoff walk and tally a pair of strikeouts, including one looking to end the game.

Rollins managed five hits in the game, all singles, and also stole four bases. Taylor Hartman earned the win, while Hautzinger picked up her first career save. The two teams combined for eight errors in the game.

Rollins will plau once more on Friday against host Lander University, followed by two games on Saturday, February 8.
