Rollins Beats Blazers in Season Opener for Sjogren’s 500th Win

Game two of the series is tomorrow at 1 p.m.

WINTER PARK, Fla. (January 31, 2025) – The Rollins baseball team took an early lead and never looked back in an 8-3 win over Valdosta State on Friday. The game, which was the season opener for both squads, was also the 500th victory at Rollins for Head Coach Jon Sjogren.

Mason Wilson went 2-for-3 with a double, home run, two runs scored, and two RBIs, while Angelo Ramirez was 1-for-2 with a home run, walk, two runs scored, and two RBIs. Dalton Pyzer, Joey Rubin, and Jeslyn Whitehead each also contributed a pair of hits for the Tars.

Nick Berger (1-0) earned the win, allowing one run on seven hits in five innings, striking out four. Ryan Murphy, AJ Seymour, and Douglas Rojas tossed the final four innings for the Blue and Gold, allowing a combined two runs on five hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Second Inning
  • The Tars got on the board first thanks to a two-out RBI single from Chris Sparber that plated Wilson with the game's first run.
Third Inning
  • Ramirez led off the third with a hit-by-pitch and moved to third two batters later on a base hit off the bat of Rubin.
  • Whitehead then singled up the middle to score Ramirez, and Pyzer followed up with a bloop double to score Rubin, making it 3-0 Tars.
Fifth Inning
  • After Valdosta State scored its first run of the game, Rollins immediately answered in the bottom of the inning.
  • Rubin led off with a double and was knocked in by a Pyzer one-out single, pushing the Rollins lead to 4-1.
Seventh Inning
  • Wilson launched a two-out, two-run home run to build the lead to 6-1 in the seventh.
Eighth Inning
  • The Blazers strung together three hits to plate two in the eighth, cutting the deficit to 6-3, but Ramirez made it a five-run game once again when he delivered a two-run homer just inside the right field foul pole, making it 8-3 Tars.
Ninth Inning
  • VSU could only muster a two-out single in the ninth as Rojas got the final three outs to secure the 8-3 win.
