WINTER PARK, Fla. (January 11, 2025) - Women's basketball suffered a home loss to the Lynn Fighting Knights on Saturday, falling by a score of 60-53. The Tars now stand at 7-7 on the year with a 2-5 record in SSC play. Lynn improves to 9-6, 3-5 SSC.
The Tars found themselves in an early 7-0 hole in the first quarter as their first six shot attempts missed the mark.
Kaitlyn Sanders broke the streak with short jumper, but Rollins only managed one more made field goal in the quarter, and wound up trailing 19-6 after one.
The second quarter saw a transformation from the Tars, as they scored at will while also limiting the Knights on defense. Rollins opened the second on a 5-0 run, and outscored Lynn 21-5 in the first seven minutes. It was a full team effort, with six different Tars scoring during the run. With 2:48 remaining,
Emily McIntosh finished a tough drive with a nifty bank shot, giving Rollins a 25-24 lead, their first of the game.
Ajalon Gillard scored the final bucket of the half, giving Rollins a 29-28 advantage at the break.
Rollins shot 2-15 (13%) in the first quarter, and then exploded for 9-13 (69%) in the second period.
Lynn won the battle of the third quarter, 10-9. Only five shots combined were made by both teams, with the remainder of the points coming from free throws. A McIntosh freebie tied the game at 38 heading into the fourth.
The final frame saw Lynn score the first five points of the quarter, but Rollins hung around thanks to free throws from
Faith Newton and a
Claire Erickson lay. Channing Chappell responded with a three for the Knights, giving them a four-point lead that they would not relinquish for the remainder of the game.
Zai Mitchell and Sanders combined for ten points in the last three minutes, but the Knights hit enough free throws to stay ahead before going home with the 60-53 win.
Sanders was the leading scorer with 16 points.
Maddie Dillinger finished just shy of her second straight double-double, tallying nine points and ten rebounds. For the game, Lynn outrebounded Rollins 39-33; it was only the second time this season that the Tars have placed second in the stat.
Next up for Rollins is a road game against Eckerd on Wednesday, January 15. The game will be played at St. Petersburg College with a 5:30 pm tipoff.
