MELBOURNE, Fla. (March 24, 2024) – The 22nd-ranked Rollins softball team fell in the series finale at Florida Tech on Sunday, with the Panthers walking off with a 5-4 win. The Tars are now 27-7, 10-5 in SSC games, while the Panthers go to 19-15 overall, 8-10 in conference play.
Sarah Young went 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI, while
Taylor Waters was 1-for-3 with a run scored, a stolen base, and an RBI.
Ashley Worrell (13-4) took the complete game loss, allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits and a walk while striking out eight in 6.2 innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Fourth Inning
- Rollins broke the scoreless tie with a pair in the fourth, beginning with a Worrell leadoff single.
- Taylor Hartman advanced her to second with a sacrifice bunt, at which point Jodee Matos pinch ran for Worrell.
- Young then doubled home Matos with the first run of the game, and she then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Kaeli Zahradnik.
- Marisa Edevane delivered a clutch two-out RBI single to make it 2-0 Tars.
- The Panthers would answer, taking advantage of a pair of Rollins errors to plate two unearned runs in the bottom of the inning, tying the game at two.
Seventh Inning
- After Florida Tech tacked on single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to go up 4-2, the Tars needed to rally, and they did.
- Brie Michelli led off the seventh with an infield single and Maddie Degnan came on to run for her.
- Grace Germer then singled to left, pushing Degnan to second.
- Waters followed with a base hit up the middle that scored Degnan, though Germer was thrown out trying to go to third base.
- Two batters later, Worrell drew a two-out walk, which put two runners on with two out.
- Hartman then reached on an error that allowed Waters to score the tying run and move Worrell to second base.
- Young came up with a single up the middle, but the ball was hit too hard to allow Worrell to score, and all three runners ended up stranded with the game still tied, 4-4.
- Florida Tech had a runner on second with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, and on a wild pitch she was able to come around and barely slide in safely with the winning run.
