No. 22 Rollins Sweeps West Georgia

The Tars ended both games early thanks to the eight-run rule

WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 20, 2024) – The 22nd-ranked Rollins softball team took both ends of a doubleheader against visiting West Georgia on Wednesday, 8-0 and 10-1, with both wins coming in six-inning affairs. The Tars are now 25-6 overall, while the Wolves drop tp 11-19.

Game 1 – No. 22 Rollins 8, West Georgia 0 (6 inn.)
 
Sarah Young went 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs in the opener, while Taylor Waters was 1-for-3 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI. Ashley Worrell (12-3) got the win in the circle, tossing a six-inning complete game shutout with just four hits and three walks allowed while striking out six; she also went 2-for-3 with a double at the plate.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Inning
  • Grace Germer led off the bottom of the first with a walk and quickly came around to score on a double from Waters.
  • Not long after that, Waters scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.
Third Inning
  • Germer started another rally in the third, leading off with a bunt single and immediately stealing second and third.
  • Two batters later, Germer scored on a sacrifice bunt squeeze play by Claire Long, pushing the lead to 3-0.
Fourth Inning
  • Young belted the first pitch of the fourth inning over the left-center field fence for a solo home run, making it 4-0.
  • Rachel Bauer reached on a one-out infield single and later scored on a wild pitch to increase the Tar lead to 5-0.
Fifth Inning
  • Long opened the fifth with a four-pitch walk and Worrell followed that with a double to put two Tars in scoring position with nobody out.
  • Two batters later, Young singled home both runs to make it a 7-0 game.
Sixth Inning
  • Maddie Degnan was hit by a pitch to start the sixth, followed by a four-pitch walk to Germer.
  • During the next at-bat, both runners advanced on a passed ball, and on the next pitch, Degnan scored on another passed ball to end the game early with an 8-0 final score.
 
Game 2 – No. 22 Rollins 10, West Georgia 1 (6 inn.)
 
In game two, Germer was 3-for-3 with a double, triple, home run, three runs scored, and three RBIs, while Brie Michelli was 3-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs, and three runs scored. Emily MacMullen (6-1) got the win, allowing a run on four hits in three innings of work, striking out six and walking none.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Inning
  • Germer doubled to open the first and Waters then crushed a two-run home run to left to quickly put Rollins ahead, 2-0.
Third Inning
  • Michelli led off the third with a base hit and this time it was Germer who came up next to belt a two-run home run, doubling the lead to 4-0.
Fifth Inning
  • After West Georgia got a run back thanks to a solo homer in the fourth, the Tars rallied to score four in the fifth.
  • Michelli opened the frame with a base hit and took second on a wild pitch.
  • Germer then hit a fly ball to right-center that led to a collision of the two outfielders, which gave Germer an RBI triple, scoring Michelli.
  • Two batters later, Long singled home Germer to make it 6-1.
  • After Worrell walked, Jodee Matos came on to run for her; she and Long executed a double-steal soon thereafter.
  • Young came up big again, doubling to left-center to score both runners, extending the margin to 8-1.
Sixth Inning
  • Emily Witt worked a walk to lead off the sixth and Michelli let everyone go home early thanks to a two-run home run to left-center that closed out the contest with a 10-1 final score.
 
UP NEXT:
The Tars are back in action this weekend as they travel to Melbourne for a conference series at Florida Tech. Due to the threat of inclement weather, the schedule for the series has been altered, with the two teams set for a doubleheader at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 23, followed by a single game on Sunday, March 24 at 1 p.m.
