Tars Make Impression at DeLand Double Duals

DELAND, Fla. (March 17, 2024) – The Rollins women's rowing team loaded up the bus early on Saturday with the destination of the DeLand Double Duals. The women were there to take care of business and they did just that.

The Tars were going to be able to line up against Embry-Riddle who they had faced two weeks prior along with a slate of Division I Rowing Teams - UConn, Stetson, Drake, Jacksonville, and Wesleyan were all in attendance, along with SSC foe Nova Southeastern. The women competed in the Varsity 8, Varsity 4 and Second Varsity 4 with a morning and afternoon race. The Varsity 8 crossed the line just three seconds behind Embry-Riddle in the morning session. The Varsity 4 finished third just behind Nova Southeastern and a little further back from Jacksonville. The 2V4 had an incredible race from start to finish. Rollins started up on the Hatters with Stetson making a push just after the 1000m mark where then Rollins countered and opened up a half boat lead where it all came down to the sprint and Rollins crossed the line winning by just .6 seconds. It is always amazing that after all the at training, all that work and all the factors that come into play that wins and losses happen in the blink of an eye.

Rollins was back on the water after a short break to do it all again. The 2V4 (Brianne Engel, Erin Hughes, Morgan Lane, Francesca Morgan-Tomacsik, Sarah Monroy) had another impressive row finishing second to Jacksonville by 8 seconds and beating Stetson by 18 seconds. The Varsity 4 had a great race as well with just 5 seconds separating first to third. Rollins was in contact the entire race and the back-and-forth jockeying made that race exciting to watch from start to finish. The Rollins Varsity 8 (Maria Littman, Abby Klesa, Kinsley Sparks, Grace Oelrich, Francesca Morgan-Tomascik, Khloe Smith, Nina Nikolic, Isabella Espino, Olivia Prelog) had a similar race between Stetson, Embry-Riddle, and the Tars. All three boats were in contact through the 1000m point where then Rollins and Stetson were able to find another gear moving away from the Eagles. In the last 300m all three boats rowed through a wake that Stetson handled a little better and not losing their momentum going into the sprint. Rollins hung on finishing second, seven seconds behind Stetson and 11 seconds ahead of Embry-Riddle.

The Tars will be back on the road this coming weekend to race at the John Ferriss Regatta in Gainesville, Georgia. This will be the first time all of these women will have the chance to row on the 1996 Olympic course and are slated to row a heat and final against 10-15 other teams who are registered for the regatta. Rollins has one more road trip, March 29-30 to Sarasota before they get a couple weeks before heading back out on the road.
