WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 1, 2024) – The Rollins softball team won its third straight contest against a ranked opponent on Friday, downing No. 15 Nova Southeastern, 2-0. The Tars are now 10-5 overall and 3-4 in SSC play, while the Sharks fall to 12-3, 6-1 in conference games.
Of note, tomorrow's doubleheader has been moved up to an earlier start time due to the forecast of inclement weather later in the day. The first game is now slated to start at 10 a.m. tomorrow.
Grace Germer was 1-for-3 with a stolen base, a run scored, and an RBI, while
Sarah Young was 1-for-2 with a run scored.
Ashley Worrell (5-2) tossed a complete game shutout, scattering five hits and four walks while racking up five strikeouts and driving in the first run of the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Inning
- Germer opened the home half of the first with a base hit through the left side of the infield, and Bri Michelli followed with a base hit to left to put two on with nobody out.
- After both runners executed a double steal, Taylor Waters coaxed a walk to load the bases.
- Worrell then lifted a 3-2 pitch to center field that was deep enough to score Germer with the game's first run.
Second Inning
- Young led off the second inning with a hit-by-pitch and she moved to second on a groundout.
- Kaeli Zahradnik then reached on a bunt single that pushed Young to third, and she was able to score on a groundout by Germer to make it 2-0 Tars.
Fifth Inning
- NSU threatened in the fifth, stringing together three straight baserunners after two were out, but Worrell induced an inning-ending groundout to keep the Sharks off the board.
Seventh Inning
- Nova Southeastern got the leadoff batter on but a baserunning mistake led to a pop-out double play, and Worrell struck out the next batter looking to end the game.
