Tars Take Series from Eighth-Ranked Mavericks

!5th-Ranked Rollins pounded out 14 hits in the win

WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 10, 2024) – The 15th-ranked Rollins baseball team grabbed a series win over No. 8 Colorado Mesa with a 13-4 win in Saturday's rubber game at Alfond Stadium. The Tars are now 4-2 on the season, while the Mavericks drop to 2-2.
 
Jimmy Thies went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, and two RBIs, while Jeslyn Whitehead was 3-for-5 with a run scored and two RBIs. Oscar Murray finished 2-for-4 with a walk, a double, a run scored, and a game-high four RBIs, and Mason Wilson was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
 
Ryan Furey started for Rollins, allowing four runs on six hits in three innings of work, walking two and striking out a pair. Ryan Murphy (1-0) got the win, tossing a scoreless inning of relief, allowing one hit and striking out one batter. Evan Cornelius, Ryan Taylor, Jacob Burr, and Paul Janeczko combined to throw four scoreless innings of relief to close out the game, surrendering a combined one hit and four walks while striking out four.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Inning
  • Damaurys Rodriguez started a one-out rally in the bottom of the first by drawing a walk.
  • After Whitehead reached on an infield single, Wilson singled home Rodriguez with the game's first run.
  • Chris Sparber then drew a walk, followed by a two-run single from Nathan Tinder.
  • Thies followed that with a base hit to load the bases, and Sparber came home on an error during the next at-bat that gave the Tars a 4-0 lead.
Second Inning
  • Colorado Mesa answered back in the second inning with three runs on three hits to make it a one-run game, 4-3.
Third Inning
  • The Mavericks took advantage of a one-out walk in the third and plated another run, knotting things up at 4-4.
Fourth Inning
  • Thies led off the fourth with a base hit, followed by a walk to Stephen Deans and then a bunt single by Jose Perez to load the bases with nobody out.
  • Murray delivered a bases-clearing double to put Rollins back in front, 7-4.
  • Two batters later, Whitehead singled home Murray to make it an 8-4 ballgame.
Sixth Inning
  • Whitehead added an insurance run in the sixth with a two-out RBI single to score Perez, lifting the lead to 9-4.
Seventh Inning
  • Wilson and Sparber opened the seventh with back-to-back singles.
  • Two batters later, Thies drilled a double to left-center, scoring both runners to make it 11-4.
  • Jack Herring then drove home Thies with a pinch-hit RBI double, and two batters after that he came home on a single from Murray, increasing the margin to 13-4.
Ninth Inning
  • CMU got a leadoff walk in the ninth, but Janeczko retired the next three batters in order to secure the 13-4 victory.
 
UP NEXT:
The Tars will continue this string of eight straight games against Top-25 competition when they host No. 11 West Florida in the first of a three-game series on Friday, February 16, with first pitch set for 5 p.m.
