WINTER PARK, Fla. (November 11, 2024) - Men's soccer continued their win streak, pushing it to five games following a 4-1 defeat of the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish in the quarterfinals of the SSC Tournament. The Tars now stand at 9-5-1, while the Sailfish end their season at 6-6-3.
The match started with thirty minutes of intense physical play and zero goals. Eventually, Palm Beach Atlantic found a way in to the net when they drew a foul at midfield, leasing to a free kick. In a matter of seconds, Harry Gardner placed the ball and sent it ahead to a streaking Agustin Iusem. Iusem took two touches and fired a laser past
Jabari Gray to make it a 1-0 game.Â
The goal simply woke up the Tars as they came back in force. First up was a nifty give-and-go situation with
Jorge Lameiras and
Yousef Shakweer. After Lameiras controlled the ball all the way to the box, he dropped a pass to Shakweer. The sophomore lifted a beautiful ball over the defense, and landed it right in front of Lameiras who slammed it to equalize.Â
Just a minute later,
Mikkel Fodstad drew the attention of three Sailfish defenders near the box before passing off to
Pedro Lameiras. Pedro moved forward and sent a cross into the front of the goal. Shakweer came out of nowhere, collected the ball with his chest, and sent the ball home with his left foot to put Rollins ahead.Â
A third goal was added in the 63rd minute when a penalty was called on a corner due to a Palm Beach Atlantic defender illegally holding down a Tar as the ball entered the box.
Jorge Lameiras was selected to take the penalty, and easily drove it to the top of the net for a 3-1 lead.Â
The scoring wrapped up with a midfield pass from Fodstad that found a lighting-fast
Jordan Proulx streaking down the sideline. After working past a defender, he sent a perfect ball across the field to Finaly Prain, who chipped it in to make the 4-1 final.Â
Aside from the excitement of five goals, this match was a heavyweight battle that saw twelve yellow cards handed out to go with 23 fouls. Rollins put 19 shots in the air, and landed eleven on goal compared to only four for the Sailfish.Â
With the win, Rollins advances to the SSC semifinals where they will face the #7 seed Barry Bucs, who defeated #2 Florida Tech earlier in the day. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 pm from Cahall-Sandspur Field in Winter Park.Â
