CHAPEL HILL, NC (October 13, 2024) - Women's golf was able to get out of the state before Hurricane Milton came through, and was able to participate in the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational at the University of North Carolina over the weekend.
Players from 17 schools teed off from Finley Golf Course on Friday, October 11. Rollins was the only Division II school in a field that included powerhouse programs such as Duke, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, and Tennessee.
Carla Alvarez posted the top score in the opening round, shooting a 73 (+3). She birdied number three and sixteen while adding eleven pars.
Megan Docherty and
Elizabeth Kondal chipped in with 79 each, and
Sarah Knitter rounded out the scoring with an 81. After day one, Rollins sat in last place at 312 .
Things changed on Saturday as the Tars came out with a better feel for the course. Docherty put together the top round for Rollins with an even par 70. Her round saw birdies on seven, eight, and twelve along with twelve pars. Freshman
Violet Robbins, who shot an 82 in her first round, improved to a 74 (+4) on day two. She was followed by a 76 from Alvarez and a 77 from Knitter. Rollins posted a 297 and had jumped three spots on the leaderboard.
Sunday's round saw the Tars post a 306, but maintain their spot above UNC Greensboro and Western Carolina. Alvarez retook the reins, shooting a 74 with three birdies. Robbins impressed again with a 75. Knitter's 78 and Kondal's 79 wrapped up the scoring for the weekend.
Rollins' final score of 915 gave them 15th place of the 17 teams. Duke took the team title with an 856, and the individual title when Andie Smith posted a 203 (-7).
The Tars will stay on the road and head down I-95 to South Carolina to play in the Edisto Island Invitational, hosted by the College of Charleston. Rollins will play two rounds on October 14, and finish up with round three on Tuesday.
