WINTER PARK, Fla. (September 10, 2023) - The Rollins Tars turned in a nearly flawless effort on Sunday, playing superb defense while also exploding for six goals on offense in a rout of the Spring Hill Badgers. The Tars now stand at 2-0-1 on the year, while Spring Hill drops to 1-3.
The scoring started on a corner kick in the 13th minute when
Colin O'Mahony fed the ball short to
Patrick Horan, who was able to lightly tap it past two defenders and a frozen goalie. It was the fourth goal of the year for Horan, the reigning SSC Player of the Week.
More than 30 minutes of phenomenal defense led to a final chance for Rollins before halftime. Elvar Kristjannson forced himself into the opposing box, drawing two defenders. A loose ball ended up near the feet of
Rian Barrett, whose quick left foot gave Rollins a 2-0 lead just 36 seconds away from halftime.
Rollins outshot Spring Hill by a wide margin, 15-2, in the first half.
Jorge Lameiras took over in the second leg of the match. In the 54th minute, he was delivered a beautiful cross from his brother,
Pedro Lameiras, and he connected to make it a 3-0 game. Only three minutes later, it was deja vu for the Lameiras boys as Pedro led Jorge with a gorgeous ball over a defender's head, giving him plenty of room to maneuver around the keeper to make it 4-0.
Again, the defense was stout, and the offense remained patient with crisp passing and an unrelenting attack. In the 85th minute, it was Pedro's turn to find the net as snuck one past the keeper after the defense collapsed on a streaking Horan.
The final tally came with under two minutes to play when
Nazar Tsaruk turned a perfect feed from Barrett into his first goal of the season.
For the game, Rollins finished with 29 shots compared to five for Spring Hill. Thirteen of those shots were on goal, compared to just three for the Badgers. The Tars also won the corner battle, with ten kicks against just one for Spring Hill.
The six goals for Rollins is their most in a game since putting up six against Nova Southeastern in 2017.
The next test for the Tars will be a real humdinger. On Wednesday, September 13, they will host the #11 ranked Florida Tech Panthers at Cahall-Sandspur Field. Kick off is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
