Horan Scores Twice in Road Win

#7 Rollins defeated #14 Wingate on Thursday evening

WINGATE, NC (August 31, 2023) - Rollins opened their season with an impressive road win, defeating #14 Wingate by a score of 3-2 on Thursday.

Both teams had opportunities early as the Bulldogs had a shot on goal in the first 90 seconds, while the Tars countered with a pair of attempts in the first four minutes. The Tars were controlling the action in the opposition's half, belting out six corners within twenty minutes of kickoff. Eventually their aggression paid off as Patrick Horan was successful on a brace off a feed from Nazar Tsaruk to put Rollins on top at the 28th minute.

The excitement for Rollins was short-lived as a mere 34 seconds later, Tajay Grant worked into the Tars' end of the field and scored unassisted to knot the score at one.

Rollins were able to put a couple more shots on goal before halftime, but both were saved by Aleksa Janjic. The score at the break remained 1-1.

Ten minutes into the second half, a Bulldog defender earned a yellow card, giving Rollins a prime opportunity to set up their offense. Horan was able to separate himself from the defense once again, and landed a perfect strike in the back of the net to put Rollins up 2-1.

A few moments later, in the 66th minute, Jorge Lameiras found himself with a prime chance, and capitalized with his first goal of the year which put the Tars on top 3-1.

From there, Rollins focused on the defensive end of the field, and kept the Bulldogs from seeing an open look. Still, Wingate was able to break through and add a late goal in the 89th minute to make the final of 3-2.

The Tars fired 20 shots at Wingate in the contest, with seven on target. Horan and Lameiras each had four attempts and two on goal. The Tars' backfield was phenomenal defensively, as they allowed only three shots on goal.

This is the fifth-straight win for Rollins over Wingate, dating back to 2017.

Next up for the Tars is another matchup at Wingate on Saturday. However, this time they will be facing #24 Lander at 1:00 pm.
