Tars Maul Marauders

Rollins defeated #1 Millersville 17-4 on Monday evening

CARY, NC (June 5, 2023) - Rollins was on a mission Monday evening, absolutely blowing out the #1 seed Millersville Marauders by a score of 17-4. The Tars moved to 41-17 on the season, while Millersville enters the elimination bracket with a record of 46-9.

After Edward Berry cruised through the top of the first, his offense gave him plenty of support in their first go-round. Joey Rubin and Adams Torres each singled to lead off, followed by a Jeslyn Whitehead sac fly. Ryan Coleman added a base knock, and then Cameron Meehan walked to load the bases. Mason Wilson brought in a pair with a grounder through the right side, and then the Tars added two runs on a throwing error and a wild pitch to go up 5-0.

Rollins would add two more in the second on a double from Coleman and a wild pitch, putting the Tars ahead by a touchdown.

Millersville broke through against Berry in the third with a trio of runs, but again, the Tars offense answered back with an RBI single from Rubin that plated Parker Smith.

The fourth was the first inning that did not see a run scored, but that would not last. Millersville got one off of a fielding error in the fifth, but the debt was wiped away instantly in the bottom half when Wilson launched a solo home run to center to make it 9-4.

Ryan Murphy spelled Berry in the sixth with two strikeouts. Then, Wilson came through once more, this time going big fly to left to bring home himself along with Meehan and Coleman.

Torres got in on the action in the seventh with a two-run shot, followed by three runs in the eighth courtesy of a Spencer Sarringar RBI double and a Marauder throwing error to make the final of 17-4.

Eight of nine Rollins starters recorded a hit in this one, with four of them recording multiple. Wilson led the way with a 3-6 day at the plate with three runs and six RBI. Six different players scored at least twice, and six different players had at least one RBI. The Tars collected 14 hits, and scored in seven of their eight at bats.

Berry wrapped up his day with a win after tossing five innings while scattering five hits, giving up four runs (three earned), and striking out seven. Murphy, Austin Long, and Spencer Mangum combined for four innings of shut out relief with seven strikeouts between them.

The Tars are sitting pretty in the winner's bracket, and will have two full days of rest before playing again on Thursday afternoon, June 8 at 1:30 PM. They will face the winner of #4 CSU San Bernardino and #1 Millersville, who will play on Wednesday, June 7.
