Tars Punch Their Ticket to Cary for Second Straight Season

Rollins knocked out Barry on Saturday to win the South Region

WINTER PARK, Fla. (May 27, 2023) – The 20th-ranked and fourth-seeded Rollins baseball team earned a return trip to the NCAA Championships in Cary, North Carolina on Saturday with a 7-1 win over sixth-seeded Barry in game two of the NCAA II South Super Regional in Winter Park. The Tars improved to 39-17 with the win, while the Bucs finish the season 35-19.

Ryan Coleman went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs, while Adams Torres was 3-for-4 with a walk, a run scored, and an RBI. Mason Wilson finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and Cameron Meehan was 2-for-3 with a walk, a home run, and two runs scored.
 
Edward Berry (6-3) earned the win, tossing seven shutout innings with just four hits and four walks allowed, striking out two. Tate Stone-Frisina finished the job, giving up a run on three hits in two innings of relief.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Inning
  • The Tars, who were the visitors for the game, jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first.
  • Adams Torres got it started with a one-out single, and he moved up to second on Ryan Coleman's two-out single.
  • After Cameron Meehan coaxed a walk to load the bases, Mason Wilson delivered an RBI infield single to put Rollins up 1-0.
Fifth Inning
  • Rollins doubled its lead on a two-out solo home run off the bat of Meehan in the fifth, making it a 2-0 game.
Seventh Inning
  • Joey Rubin led off the seventh with a base hit to right and moved to second when Torres drew a walk.
  • Two batters later, Coleman launched a three-run blast over the right field wall to make it 5-0 Tars.
  • Meehan then got on with a bunt single and promptly stole second before coming in to score on an RBI single from Mason Wilson.
Eighth Inning
  • Spencer Sarringar opened the eighth with a double and moved to third on a flyout before scoring on an RBI single from Torres, extending the lead to 7-0.
Ninth Inning
  • Barry pushed across its lone run of the game in the ninth inning, but Tate Stone-Frisina was able to close the door to secure the 7-1 victory.
Series Notes
  • Rollins finishes the year 5-0 against Barry
  • This is the second consecutive year that Rollins will travel to Cary, and the third time since the turn of the century (2004). 
  • The Tars outscored the Buccaneers 14-5 in two games, and outhit them 25-12
  • Leadoff man Joey Rubin went 4-10 with three runs and an RBI. His 66 runs scored this season are the third-most in Tars history
  • Cam Meehan, who was 2-3 on Saturday, has hit safely in five of six postseason games, and has multiple hits in four of them
  • Ryan Coleman was 2-21 in the postseason before Saturday, where he registered a 3-5 effort
  • Every starter for the Tars recorded a hit in Saturday's game, except for Jeslyn Whitehead, who ironically leads the Tars in hits this season
  • Rollins only used four pitchers this weekend; they combined to allow five earned runs on twelve hits in 18 innings
 
Up Next:
The Tars will be returning to Cary, North Carolina for the NCAA II Championships, which are slated to begin on Saturday, June 3. Once all games complete on Saturday, the bracket will be freshly seeded by the NCAA committee.
