Tars Even Series with Mavericks

No. 6 Rollins defeated No. 12 Colorado Mesa 6-4 on Saturday evening

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (April 15, 2023) - Rollins bounced back to even the series with Colorado Mesa on Saturday, winning game two by a score of 6-4. The Tars move to 26-10 on the season, while the #12 Mavericks drop to 28-9.

Rollins jumped out to an early lead with a strong first inning. Joey Rubin led off with a walk, followed by an Adams Torres single. After a strikeout, Cameron Meehan drove in Rubin with a single to left field. Next up was Jorge Ramirez who hit a ball to short. The ball got away from the shortstop, allowing Torres to score and moving Meehan to third. Kyle Bullock was up next, and his sac bunt allowed Meehan to score, making it 3-0.

Edward Berry drew the start for Rollins on the mound, and was effective through two innings. However, a blister on his throwing hand forced him to leave the game after two, bringing in Tate Stone-Frisina from the bullpen. He allowed a run in the third, but the Tars were quick to respond with a run in the top of the fourth on a RBI single from Torre.

After Stone-Frisina tossed a pair of scoreless frames in the fourth and fifth, the Tars added to their lead again. Rubin doubled to right center, and was brought in two batters later on a Whitehead singled to make it 5-1. The lead grew to 6-1 in the seventh when Spencer Sarringar drove in Parker Smith with a single.

The Mavericks scored twice in the seventh on a sac fly and a throwing error, but Meehan was able to gun down the runner Boyd who tried to advance on the play to prevent further damage. They then scored once more in the eighth on a double and a single to make it 6-4.

In the final inning, Michael Cullen induced a double play, followed by Whitehead entering the game as a pitcher to secure the win. He did so but forcing a pop up to short, giving Rollins the win

Whitehead had four hits on the day to go with an RBI. Sarringar added three hits out of the nine-hole as well. Stone-Frisina was solid on short notice out of the pen, striking out seven in 4.1 innings. The save as Whitehead's first of the season.

The two teams will face off once more on Sunday in the rubber match. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm eastern.
