WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 12, 2023) – The Rollins softball team extended its winning streak to nine games with its fourth consecutive doubleheader sweep on Sunday, defeating Mercy College 8-0 in six innings before taking the finale, 5-1. The wins put the Tars at 15-9 overall, while the Mavericks fall to 1-13.
Game 1 – Rollins 8, Mercy 0 (6 inn.)
Six players registered at least one hit and one run scored for Rollins, led by
Ashley Troutman, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI, two runs scored, and two stolen bases.
Brie Michellie was 3-for-3 with a run scored and
Grace Germer finished 1-for-2 with two runs scored and four steals.
Emily MacMullen (8-6) got the win, tossing a six-inning complete game shutout, allowing six hits and no walks while striking out four.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Inning
- Troutman opened the first with a bunt single and took second on a wild throw from the pitcher before moving to third on a wild pitch.
- After Germer was hit by a pitch and stole second, both runners advanced 60 feet on another wild pitch, which plated Troutman.
- Claire Long then drew a walk, and on a fake stolen base attempt by Long, Germer was able to score on a steal of home, doubling the lead to 2-0.
Third Inning
- Germer got on base with a one-out bunt single in the third and promptly stole two bases.
- Two batters later, Taylor Waters delivered a sacrifice fly to score Germer, making it a 3-0 game.
Fourth Inning
- Michelli got the fourth inning started with a base hit, and Sarah Young followed that with an infield single.
- After a sacrifice bunt from Emma Gipple, Morgan Lebeda lifted a sacrifice fly to score Michelli.
- Troutman followed up with a base hit to score Young, increasing the lead to 5-0.
Fifth Inning
- Long opened the fifth with a single, and two batters later Jaden Walker launched a two-run home run to left to make it a 7-0 game.
Sixth Inning
- Troutman led off the bottom of the sixth with a solid single through the left side of the infield.
- On the next pitch, Troutman took off for second; the throw from the catcher sailed into center field, allowing Troutman to race to third; the center fielder tried to cut her down at third but that throw was also errant, allowing Troutman to score the game-ending run, giving Rollins an 8-0 run-rule win.
Game 2 – Rollins 7, Post 2
In game two, Troutman went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, two runs scored, and two RBIs, while Germer was 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, an RBI, and three steals. Waters finished 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI and Gipple was 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.
Taylor Hartman (3-0) got the win, giving up one run on two hits in 6.2 innings of work, walking one and striking out four.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Inning
- Mercy used a single, stolen base, sacrifice bunt, and RBI groundout to get on the board in the top of the first.
- Troutman wasted no time getting that run back, hitting a leadoff home run in the bottom half to tie the game at one.
Fifth Inning
- The Tars finally untied it in the fifth to take their first lead of the game.
- Germer led off with a bunt single and then stole second and third.
- Two batters later, Waters allowed her to score easily on a triple to the right field corner, putting Rollins up, 2-1.
Sixth Inning
- A one-out walk to Gipple sparked a three-run rally for Rollins in the sixth.
- Troutman followed with a laser of a double to left-center, scoring Gipple.
- Germer then launched a ground-rule double that hopped over the right-center field wall, scoring Troutman.
- During the next at-bat, Germer stole third and came home to score on an errant throw by the catcher, giving Rollins a commanding 5-1 lead.
Seventh Inning
- Hartman took care of the first two hitters in the seventh and Lebeda came on in relief to strike out the final batter.

The Tars will be back on the field on Wednesday, March 15, when they host Bloomsburg in another non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
