Landau, Defense Lead Tars to Victory

Senior scored the only goal of the game on a penalty kick

MELBOURNE, Fla. (August 25, 2022) - Playing on the home field of SSC foe Florida Tech, the Rollins Tars earned a hard-fought win in their first match of the season, defeating the Wingate Bulldogs 1-0 on Thursday afternoon.

After the two teams traded a pair of shots in the first twenty minutes, the momentum shifted the Tars' way. With Rollins on the attack, a well-touched ball found a streaking Michael Landau on the left side of the Wingate goal. As he was preparing to make his move, a Bulldog defender came in too aggressively with a slide tackle, earning Landau a penalty shot. The senior calmly delivered a left-footed strike to the right corner of the net to give the Tars a 1-0 lead, which they would take into the locker room at halftime.

The Tars stifled Wingate defensively, limiting them to only four shots on goal in the match, including just one in the first half. Keeper Maximillian Obermeier was in top form, saving all four shots and leading the defensive unit.

As the Tars ran out the clock in the second half with more patient possessions, the Bulldogs got a little too aggressive. A few Rollins players responded in due course, leading to a total of nine yellow cards in the second half.

Rollins will be back in action on Sunday when they make their 2022 home debut. The Tars will host the Embry-Riddle Eagles in a non-conference early season matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
