CARY, N.C. (June 10, 2022) – The 20th-ranked and sixth-seeded Rollins baseball team saw its magical 2022 season conclude on Friday afternoon with a 2-0 loss to No. 4 and second-seeded Point Loma in the national semifinals at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina. The Tars wrap up the campaign with a 43-17 mark, while the Sea Lions will advance to the national championship with a 51-9 record.
The 43 wins are the second-most in program history, surpassed only by the 2004 edition of the Tars that went 48-12 and finished fourth at the NCAA II National Championship. The 2022 season marks just the fifth time that Rollins has reached 40 wins in the 76-year history of the program.
Adams Torres went 2-for-4 for the Tars, while
Chase Achuff,
Jeslyn Whitehead, and
Nick Santucci all finished 1-for-3 with a walk.
Nick Berger (1-2) was tagged with the loss after giving up just one run on six hits in six innings of work, walking three and striking out one.
Otto Kemp was 4-for-4 with a walk and two stolen bases for the Sea Lions, while Jakob Christian finished 2-for-3 with a stolen base and a run scored.
Baxter Halligan (14-2) got the win, allowing four hits and two walks across six shutout innings while striking out five. Cole Hillier registered his 17th save of the year, pitching two scoreless innings, surrending a walk and two hits while striking out one.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Second Inning
- Point Loma took advantage of a hit-by-pitch in the second to plate its first run.
- After Christian was hit, a single put runners on the corners.
- The Sea Lions then executed a successful squeeze play which allowed Christian to score.
- A walk then loaded the bases with only one out, but Berger was able to induce a 6-4-3 double play to escape any further damage.
Seventh Inning
- After four quiet innings, PLNU doubled its lead in the seventh, using back-to-back singles, a double steal, and a sacrifice fly to make it a 2-0 game.
Ninth Inning
- The Tars threatened in the bottom of the ninth, with Santucci leading off with a single and Cameron Meehan reaching on an error, putting runners on first and second with nobody out.
- A groundout moved both runners up into scoring position, but a strikeout and a lineout ended the game.
