No. 14 Rollins Takes Series Opener at PBA

The Tars scored once in the seventh and once in the eighth to secure the win

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (March 18, 2022) – The 14th-ranked Rollins baseball team took an early 3-0 lead and held on late for a 5-4 win at Palm Beach Atlantic on Friday night. The win pushes the Tars to 19-5 overall and 5-2 in conference play, while the Sailfish drop to 13-11, 4-6 in SSC games.


Chase Achuff went 3-for-5 with two runs scored while Ryan Coleman was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Nick Santucci finished 1-for-5 with a stolen base, a run scored, and an RBI.
 
Jaylyn Whitehead (5-1) earned the win, tossing seven innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits and one walk while striking out eight. Austin Long collected his fourth save, pitching the final two innings, giving up one run on two hits and a walk with one strikeout.
 
Sean Houck finished 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored, and an RBI for Palm Beach Atlantic, while Nate Housen was 2-for-3 with a walk and a double.
 
Ethan Petric threw the first six innings for the Sailfish, allowing three unearned runs on five hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Chris Seymour (1-1) took the loss, pitching the final three innings, surrendering two runs (one earned) on five hits, walking one and striking out five.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Third Inning
  • Joey Rubin reached on an error to lead of the third and Achuff singled to follow, sending Rubin to third base.
  • Santucci then reached on an error that allowed Rubin to score the game's first run.
  • After Jeslyn Whitehead sacrifice bunted Santucci and Achuff to second and third, Coleman delivered a clutch two-run single to make it 3-0.
     
  • The Sailfish answered with two unearned runs in the bottom half to cut the lead to 3-2.
Fifth Inning
  • PBA tied it up in the fifth when Houck hit a solo home run.
Seventh Inning
  • Rollins retook the lead on a two-out RBI single off the bat of Jeslyn Whitehead.
Eighth Inning
  • The Tars added an insurance run when Aidan Healy stole home on ball four to Sam Tanous, giving Rollins a 5-3 lead.
Ninth Inning
  • Palm Beach Atlantic got one run back with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but Long was able to close the door with a strikeout of Matty Warren to end the game with a Sailfish runner stranded at third.
 
UP NEXT:
The Tars and Sailfish will wrap up this three-game SSC series with a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 12 p.m.
