Tars Use the Long Ball to Sweep Embry-Riddle

WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 20, 2022) – The Rollins baseball team completed its second consecutive three-game series sweep on Sunday, defeating visiting Embry-Riddle 11-8. The Tars launched three home runs in the game, improving to 7-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play, while the Eagles fell to 1-8, 0-3 in SSC games.


Parker Smith was 2-for-5 with two home runs and four RBIs, while Nick Santucci went 2-for-5 with a home run, two runs scored, and two RBIs. Joey Rubin was 2-for-4 with a double and scored twice, and Jeslyn Whitehead finished 1-for-4 with a run scored and three RBIs. Chase Achuff was 1-for-3 with two walks and three runs scored.
 
Kieran Casey started and surrendered four runs on three hits in two innings, walking one and striking out three. Tate Stone-Frisina (2-1) got the win in relief, allowing three runs on four hits in three innings of work. Achuff came in from shortstop to pitch a scoreless ninth, giving up just one hit while earning his second save of the year.
 
Josh Reynolds was 1-for-5 with a two-run homer for the Eagles, while Nick Hoffman and Jeremy Kennedy-Davis each went 1-for-4 with a solo homer. Max Law went 1-for-5 with a double, a run scored, and two RBIs, while Daniel Trillo was 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
 
Kelsey Ward started for ERAU but only lasted 0.2 innings, giving up three runs on two hits, walking three and picking up two strikeouts. Casey Keller (0-2) was credited with the loss, allowing four runs on four hits in 1.1 innings, walking a pair and striking out one.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Inning
  • Rubin led off with a double over the center fielder's head and moved to third on an Achuff single.
  • Adams Torres then drew a walk to load the bases, and Jeslyn Whitehead followed with another walk, scoring Rubin with the game's first run.
  • Three batters later, Kyle Bullock drew a walk to score Achuff, which chased Ward from the game.
  • Timothy Mira was then hit by a pitch on the second pitch of the game from Garner Spoljaric, pushing Torres across to make it 3-0.
Third Inning
  • Kennedy-Davis led off with a home run to left to give Embry-Riddle its first run of the series.
  • Four batters later, Law doubled home two more runs to tie the game at three.
  • Two batters later, Zach Coldsnow gave the Eagles the lead with an RBI groundout, and Andrew Martinez followed with an RBI single to make it 5-3 Embry-Riddle.
Fourth Inning
  • Rubin led off with a base hit, followed by an Achuff walk.
  • Torres laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners, allowing Jeslyn Whitehead to drive them both in with a one-out single., tying the game at five.
  • After Santucci singled and the Eagles went to the bullpen once again, Smith delivered his first home run of the game, a three-run shot to left-center, putting the Tars up 8-5.
Fifth Inning
  • The Eagles got two runs back in the fifth on Reynolds' home run, trimming the deficit to 8-7.
 
  • Santucci quickly got those runs back for the Tars with a two-run shot of his own in the bottom half of the inning, giving Rollins a 10-7 lead.
Sixth Inning
  • A solo home run from Hoffman to lead off the sixth made it 10-8.
Eighth Inning
  • The Tars added an insurance run in the eighth when Smith belted his second homer of the game, making it 11-8.
Ninth Inning
  • Achuff nailed down the save, giving up only a two-out single in a scoreless ninth.
 
UP NEXT:
The Tars will travel to Saint Augustine next weekend for a two-game series at Flagler. Game one is set for Friday, Feb. 25 at 5 p.m.
