Men’s Tennis Hosts Varner Memorial Florida Cup

Moritz Stenzer went 3-0 in doubles and 2-1 in singles this weekend
WINTER PARK, Fla. (October 16, 2022) – The Rollins men's tennis team welcomed a trio of teams from the Sunshine State to the Bert Martin Tennis Complex this weekend for the Varner Memorial Florida Cup. The event featured one Florida school from each division, including Eastern Florida State (NJCAA), Warner (NAIA), Rollins (NCAA II), and Stetson (NCAA I). While not formatted like a team tournament, the event used a unique system that resulted in the players from Stetson taking home the cup.

COACH'S QUOTES:
"It was a really good, tough weekend, and we played our way well into Sunday with meaningful matches," Head Coach Jay Friedman said. "Clearly we have made some improvements and guys are really buying into the system we are trying to install here. I'm especially happy for Richie [Stoiberer] getting a solid win on Sunday and Guillermo [Castaneda] for showing up with hard-fought wins all three days. Coming off the break from Hurricane Ian and all that has happened this year, I think we have a group that could turn into something very special if they put their minds to it. I'm very much looking forward to the Spring and what surprises we have in store."

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Doubles
  • Mikkel Baumann went 3-0 in doubles, combining with Guillermo Castaneda for a 7-5 victory against Eastern Florida State on Friday before teaming up with Moritz Stenzer for victories against Warner and Stetson on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
  • Stenzer also earned a win against EFSC with Efe Comu, giving him a 3-0 record in doubles at the event.
  • The duo of Luke Quaynor and Richard Stoiberer went a perfect 3-0 in doubles as well, cruising to 6-2 wins over Eastern Florida State and Warner before capping the weekend with a 7-6 (1) win against Stetson.
Singles
  • Castaneda was the only Tar to pick up victories in singles against all three opponents, winning twice in a third set 10-point super match tiebreak.
  • Quaynor, Baumann, and Stenzer each registered straight-sets wins against both EFSC and Warner, while Stoiberer was victorious against Warner and Stetson.
