WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (April 28, 2021) - Rollins baseball wrapped up their season on the road on Wednesday afternoon, falling to the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish by a score fo 4-3 at Jake Rubin Park.
The game was a late addition to the schedule, and was a make-up for a previously postponed match on April 16.Â
Kyle Kramer drew the start for Rollins. After the Tars went down in order in the top of the first, Palm Beach Atlantic was able to get on the board with an RBI double from Ramon Machado to make it 1-0 early on. Rollins threatened in the second inning with two men on, but Sailfish starter Christian Denton stymied the rally with a pop up and a strikeout to retain the lead.
After a quiet third inning, Rollins was able to push ahead in the top of the fourth.
Cody Oerther led off with a single, and was moved to second on a sac bunt from
Parker Smith. Two batters later,
Cameron Meehan beat out an infield single that plated Oerther to tie things up.
Jake Rolly was the next man up, and hit a chopper to short that took a funny hop, and made it through the infield. Meehan, who was hustling with two outs, came all the way around to score from first on the play to give Rollins a 2-1 lead.Â
Palm Beach Atlantic was able to tie things up in the bottom of the fifth when Brandon Seltzer singled to center field to score Landen Morrison. They would then retake the lead in the sixth thanks to a Sebastian Salado base hit that scored Robert Fabelo.Â
The Tars weren't ready to go down without a fight. In the top of the seventh, Rolly singled and was replaced by pinch-runner
Logan Riedel.
Sam LaFontaine laid down a sac bunt to move the runner into scoring position. One batter later, an errant pickoff throw allowed Riedel to move to third, followed by a bad throw from the center fielder who was trying to gun down Riedel on the same play. The two-error play allowed Riedel to cross the plate and tie things up at three apiece.Â
The Sailfish took the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Fabelo ripped a double to center field. He would then advance to third on a wild pitch, and then score on a second wild pitch to make the final of 4-3. LaFontaine doubled with two outs in the ninth to make things interesting, but a groundout ended the game.Â
With the loss, the Tars finish the 2021 season at 9-11 and 9-10 in SSC play.
