Rollins Falls Just Short of Upsetting #8 Saint Leo

Lions defeated the Tars 4-3 on Tuesday

WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 30, 2021) - In an epic battle that took almost three hours, the Rollins women's tennis team fell just short of an upset of #8 Saint Leo, losing by a final score of 4-3 at the Bert Martin Tennis Complex in Winter Park on Tuesday.

The Lions captured the first point of the day by taking two out of three doubles matches. The first to finish was on court one where Molly Helgesson and Lavinia Lancellotti handed Georgina Groth and Alexandra Borg their first loss of the season, 6-2. Then, on court three, Marta Vicens Miquel and Celina Ermann defeated Kaitlynn Groves and Maria McKay 6-4. The Tars avoided a doubles sweep when Polina Vlasova and Maria McKay won 7-5 versus Nina Furmaniak and Takhmina Zhantova.

Groves put the Tars on the board with a win on singles three over Furmaniak, 6-3, 6-0. The Lions claimed their second of the day on court one with a 6-4, 6-2 win for Helgesson over Groth. The next point also went to Saint Leo on court five where Ermann defeated Wasil 7-6, 5-1. Rollins was not ready to roll over though. On court two, Borg put up an impressive effort, beating Vicens Miquel 6-2, 1-6, 6-4. With the score 3-2 in favor of Saint Leo, the match was decided on court four when Lancellotti squaked past Vlasova in three sets. McKay made the score respectable for the Tars by taking the win on court six over Ashley Griffith.

The loss drops Rollins to 2-4 on the year, with all four losses coming to teams ranked in the Top 10 of the ITA National Poll. Their next game will be in one week's time, at Florida southern on April 6th.
