Lakers Sink Tars to Open Rollins Classic

The Tars struggled to score in their opening game of the 2021 Rollins Classic, falling to Grand Valley State 70-39

WINTER PARK, Fla. (November 26, 2021) – The Tars struggled to score in their opening game of the 2021 Rollins Classic, falling to Grand Valley State 70-39.  With the defeat Rollins drops to 2-3 on the young season.  The Lakers remain perfect on the year, improving to 4-0 overall.
 
Kymora Westerfield led the Tars with 10 points, hitting a pair of three pointers.  Asia Newsome and Silvia Lasarte Garcia each tallied six points.  Newsome also led Rollins with four rebounds.  Rollins only managed an 18.8% shooting percentage from the field, while they went 84.2% from the charity stripe.
 
Emily Spitzley, of Grand Valley State, led all scorers with 19 points.  Qay Stanton added ten points for the Lakers, while leading the team with seven rebounds.  The Lakers got 22 points in the paint, 19 points of Rollins turnovers, as they led wire to wire.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter
  • The Lakers started the game on a 20-0 run, putting the Tars in a deep, early hole.
  • A Lucy Leen jump shot with three minutes remaining in the first quarter put Rollins on the scoreboard.
  • Kymora Westerfield hit a three to cut the lead to 17, but back-to-back buckets from the Lakers grew the advantage to 21 before the first break.
Second Quarter
  • Grand Valley State started the second quarter on a run as well, ballooning their lead to 30 by the halfway point.
  • The Tars managed to get to the free throw line late as a pair of Asia Newsome points sent the teams to the locker rooms with the score 39-11.
Third Quarter
  • The Tars managed to trade baskets with the Lakers after the break.
  • Silvia Lasarte Garcia got Rollins on the board with a jump shot.  A Westerfield three cut the lead to 27, but a late flurry from the Lakers grew the lead to 33, at 53-20, heading into the fourth.
Fourth Quarter
  • The Tars finally found their shooting stroke in the final period, though it was too little too late.
  • An Isabella Prada three pointer shrunk the Tars' deficit to 27.
  • The Tars went 9-11 from the free throw line, as Rollins won the quarter 19-17.

Rollins will conclude the 2021 Rollins Classic tomorrow, November 27, 2021, when they take on Mercyhurst.  Tip off against the Lakers is set for 2 p.m.
