WINTER PARK, Fla. (November 16, 2021) - The Rollins Tars took home their second straight victory with a 71-40 blowout win against the Warner University Royals. The Tars move to 2-1 on the year, while the Royals fall to 1-3.
How it happened:
- The Tars jumped out to a quick five-point lead thanks to a Kymora Westerfield triple and a Silvia Lasarte Garcia mid-range jumper. After Warner pulled within one, Rollins went on a 9-0 run over the next three minutes of game time with made shots from five different players. At the end of the period, Rollins had a comfortable 16-8 lead.Â
- Quarter two was much of the same as Warner struggled to find open looks against the Tars' smothering defense. On top of that, Rollins knocked down five of their first seven shots in the quarter, including two fast break layups from Asia Newsome. It was a full team effort on offense as six different Tars scored at least one bucket on 9-14 shooting (3-6 from three-point range). Meanwhile, Warner was limited to 30% shooting in the quarter, and headed into halftime trailing 37-17.
- Both teams battled coming out of the break. Megan Peterson nailed a three from the corner for Warner, but Rollins was able to answer with a three from Yoke Tassent and layups from Garcia and Maria Atanassov-Tomas. Despite the Royals' best efforts (they shot 50% from the field in the quarter), they could not gain any ground on Rollins as the Tars continued to pour it on from all parts of the court. Rollins matched Warner with a 50% mark from the field, and headed into the final frame leading 58-34.
- With the game out of reach, both teams coasted through the final period. Tassent, Westerfield and Grace Alfieri all hit three-pointers in the quarter to bring the Tars total for the game to eleven. Once again, the Rollins zone defense befuddled the Royals, leading them to shooting 2-17 from the field. When all was said and done, the Tars had an easy 71-40 victory.
Tassent was the leading scorer for the second time this season, totaling 13 points. Garcia went 5-7 from the field for 12 points, and also added four rebounds.
Lucy Leen hit three threes off the bench and finished with nine points.
Next up for the Tars is the SSC opener. They will head to West Palm Beach to take on the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish on Saturday, November 20. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:00 pm. Fans can catch all the action live on the Tars Sports Network.Â
