Rollins and Saint Leo Split; Lions win Series

WINTER PARK, FLA. (March 7, 2020) – After dropping the series opener to 15th-ranked Saint Leo on Friday, third-ranked Rollins bounced back with a win to start Saturday's doubleheader, but fell in the rubber match to give the Lions the series.

Riding the right arm of Ashley Worrell, the Tars (21-2, 10-2 Sunshine State Conference) won game one 4-1, but were shutout in the night cap 3-0.

Pitcher Ashley Worrell won her 12th game of the season, racking up 12 strikeouts and allowing one run on two hits. 

Chelsea Peace hit 1-3, scored two runs, and blew open a tight game with a two-run homer in the fifth., her ninth of the season. Tyler Jo Colby went 1-3 with a double.

The Lions got their only run in the top of the first inning when Maddy Lynn drew a bases loaded walk.

In the bottom of the second, Colby scored from third as the Lions tried to catch Talia Kentoffio stealing. Rollins took the lead in the third when Saint Leo committed a bases loaded, two-out error off the bat of Kentoffio, allowing Peace to score.

Worrell walked to lead off the fifth and Kara Wagstaff came in to run. Peach then homered to center on the next at bat to push Rollins in front 4-1.

Worrell then put the Lions down in order to close the win for the Tars.

Rollins scattered five hits, but couldn't push any runs across and were shutout for just the second time in 24 games this season.

Colby went 1-3 with a double to lead the Tars offense. Taylor Waters, Peace Lindsay Gehring and Kentoffio also had base knocks.

Ali Shenefield took the loss in the circle. She pitched in seven innings, throwing five strikeouts and allowing eight hits.

To get their first run Makensey Pankers doubled to center field and Bayley Williams scored in the top of the fourth. In the top of the sixth, Ali Jaquith singled to center and Kayleice Hooks scored. To finish the game, Amanda James doubled and Alexis Miniet gave the Lions their third run of the game.  

The No. 3 Tars are back in action traveling to Tampa on Friday, March 13 to start a three-game series. Satruday's doubleheader is set for a 12 p.m. start.
