WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 2, 2019) – Rollins Women's Tennis Head Coach Bev Buckley picked up her 500th career win, as the Tars picked up a key Sunshine State Conference win over Florida Tech at the Bert Martin Tennis Complex. The Tars were able to down the Panthers 5-2. The win moves the Tars to 8-6 on the year, and 2-2 in SSC action. The Panthers drop to 9-5 in 2019, and 1-5 against conference competition.
The Tars took the first doubles match, but fell in the second and third decisions, as the Panthers captured the doubles point. Savanna Fuller and Carlye Goldman earned Rollins victory in the third position, 6-1.
The Tars won the first three singles matches, sparking a comeback, and putting Rollins on the brink of victory. Marie Debruyn started the rally, cruising to a 6-0, 6-4 win. Fuller earned her second win of the day, making easy work of Marie Chun, taking the third court match 6-3, 6-0. Freshman Kaitlyn Groves outlasted her opponent, taking a number of long volleys in her 6-2, 6-1, fifth spot win. After the Panthers took the second position, Teresa Kaiser would clinch the match for the Tars. The senior came back from first set defeat, to dominate the second and third sets, 4-6, 6-1, 6-0, sealing her coach's milestone win. Alexandra Borg would sweeten the afternoon with a three set upset of No. 45 Alahna Reto, 3-6, 7-5, 10-5 on the top court.
The Tars take a day off, but have to recover quickly with No. 2 Saint Leo set to visit Winter Park on Thursday, April 4, at 4 p.m.
