No. 4 Spartans Too much for Tars in Doubleheader

WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 28, 2018) – The No. 4 nationally ranked Spartans proved to be too much for the Tars in both games of the doubleheader, dropping the first game 7-1, and the second game 7-3.

The Tars fall to 16-27 overall, and 4-20 in Sunshine State Conference play. Tampa improves to 35-7, 23-1 in conference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game One:

  • It was the Spartans who would strike first in game one, plating five runs in the first four innings, taking a 5-0 lead over the Tars.
  • It was again Tampa adding to their lead in the top of the fifth inning, adding two more runs to their advantage to go up 7-0.
  • The Tars would finally get on the board in the bottom of the seventh, when Luke Reidy slammed a single to right field, bringing home Bryce Peterson and cutting the Spartans lead to 7-1.
  • The Tars couldn't muster a comeback against the Spartans, falling 7-1.

Game Two:

  • Rollins would surrender an early run to the Spartans off an error, which gave Tampa a 1-0 advantage in the top of the first inning.
  • The Tars answered back in the bottom of the first when Brendan Brundag stole home on a throwing error by the Spartans, leveling the score at 1-1.
  • Reidy got things going in the bottom of the second with an RBI double to right center, pushing the Tars lead to 2-1.
  • Rollins continued to build on their lead in the bottom of the third, when Bryce Peterson would plate Nick Breen to give the Tars a 3-1 advantage.
  • A busy fifth and sixth innings for the Spartans would see them retake the lead, as the Red and Black would score four runs in that span, bringing the score to 5-3.
  • From then on it would be all Tampa, as the Spartans would tack on another two runs late to down the Tars, 7-3.
