Tars' Upset Bid Falls Short

FINAL SCORE:
No. 23 Rollins (4-1-1) – 0
No. 5 Lynn (6-0-0) – 1

BOCA RATON, Fla. (September 27, 2017) – Facing their second top-five team of the 2017 campaign, the Tars fell short in an upset bid of No. 5 Lynn, 1-0.   The Fighting Knights would tally late in the first half; Rollins tried, but could not find an opportunity to equalize for the remainder of the match.  This is the first loss of the year for the Tars, who fall to 4-1-1 on the year, and 2-1-0 in Sunshine State Conference play.  Lynn improves to 6-0-0 in 2017, and 2-0-0 in conference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Half: Both teams battled through the opening portion of the match, as shots were hard to come by.  The Fighting Knights would find the break through in the 36th minute.  A cross from Cristoph Maug would be gathered by Max Herbert at the top of the box.  The junior fired a shot which deflected passed Tars' keeper Julian Grundler.  Both teams ended the period with three shots, while Rollins forced Lynn into one save.

Second Half: Lynn would only increase their pressure in the second half.  The Fighting Knights outshot the Tars 11-2 in the second half.  The Rollins defense would hold steady, and Grundler would make five saves, to keep Rollins in the game.  However, the Tars could not mount a successful counter attack, as Rollins succumbed the the fifth ranked Fighting Knights 1-0.

NOTES:

  • The Tars are now 10-22-2 all time against Lynn.
  • Lynn outshot Rollins 14-5, and earned seven corner kicks against the Tars' two.
  • Defender Fritz Engel led the Tars, taking two shots, in 90 minutes of action.
  • Head Coach Keith Buckley moves to 310-149-30, as he is in his 27th season at the helm of the Rollins soccer program.

UP NEXT:
The Tars must now turn their attention to Nova Southeastern.  Rollins' SSC tilt against the Sharks will take place at Barker Family Stadium on Saturday, September 30, at 7 p.m.
