WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 121, 2017) - Rollins
and the Barry University Bucs battled back and forth all night in
the opener of a three-game series with Mike
Dolan blasting a walk-off homer in the 11th to give
the Tars a 10-9 win.
Rollins (24-15, 8-8 SSC) were led by senior Mike
Purcell who batted 3-6, scored two runs himself, as well as
brought in three RBI. Also, leading the Tars was freshman BJ
Minarcin who went 3-6 on the night, with two runs scored and
two RBI.
Dolan hit his second walk off winner in less than a week with a
solo shot over the left field fence in the bottom of the
11th to seal the victory for the Tars. He also supplied
the game winning hit in the Tars upset of Nova Southeastern the
previous week.
Khalil Denson and Andrew Rapoza paced the Bucs (19-23, 6-10 SSC)
offensively. Denson was 3-5 from at the plate, and also tallied a
run scored. Rapoza recorde two hits, two runs scored, as well as
two RBI on the night for the Bucs.
Freshman AJ
Chacon got the start on the mound for the Tars. He pitched 5.2
innings, giving up three runs with two punch outs. Appearances were
made by Caleb
Jakes, Joey
Vecchione, and Whit
Drennan out of the Tars bullpen. Brett
Scafidi earned his first win of the season on the hill,
throwing one inning, scattering two hits, and dished out two
strikeouts.
For the Bucs, Jonathan Hernandez got the nod as
the starting pitcher. He pitched 4.2 innings, giving up four runs,
and tossing two strikeouts against 22 batters faced. The Bucs would
go deep into their bullpen, using five other pitchers on the night,
including Erik Bauer in the closing innings. Bauer pitched 1.2
innings for the Bucs, giving up just one hit and striking out two
Tars in the process, as he picked up his first loss of the
season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• It was the Bucs who would throw the first punch, taking a
2-0 early lead on in the game, with a Justin Lamazares single to
center field which brought home Ryan Baldwin, as well as Jonathan
Quintana solo home run.
• The Tars wouldn't respond until the bottom of the fifth
inning, but respond they did. They would go on to score four runs
in the inning capped off by a Brian
Brooker double down the left field line.
• Again, it was the Bucs who retook the lead in the seventh
inning with an Alexis Monge single up the middle. However, the Tars
would answer in the same inning with Ashline bringing home Peter
Nicoletto from third.
• The Bucs thought they stole the game from the Tars when
they took a slight single run lead in the top of the ninth, but the
Tars would score a single run of their own to tie the score and
send the game to overtime.
• A monster 10th inning by both teams kept the
fans on their toes, as three runs were scored by both the Tars and
the Bucs to send the game into the 11th.
• Senior Mike
Dolan hit the walk off home run for the Tars in the bottom of
the 11th with two outs, his second walk off in less than
a week, to keep the Tars postseason dreams alive.
