Tars Take Defensive Battle from Bobcats

WINTER PARK, Fla. (November 20, 2017) – Points were hard to come by due to solid defensive efforts on both ends of the floor as Rollins pulled out a 62-54 win over St. Thomas on Monday evening.

The 17th-ranked Tars offense was held to 20 points under its season average while the Bobcats scored nearly 10 less despite a standout night beyond the arc, hitting 10-of-21 three-pointers.

Rollins (4-0) was led by 12 points each from seniors Jasmine Stone and Julia Ingler. Denise Daniels added 11 points and six rebounds while Carly McLendon posted the season's first double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. The reigning Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Week also had three blocks and two steals.

Samara Auguste led St. Thomas (1-4) with 14 points while Katie Rienas added 13.

The Tars shot just 35 percent (21-60) from the field, including 7-of-23 from distance. STU hit 20-of-54 (33 percent). Rollins continued its dominance on the boards this season, outrebounding the Bobcats 41-33.

Rollins took a 13-6 lead after the first six minutes before back-to-back three-pointers by Rienas and an Auguste layup gave STU a 14-13 lead with 3:02 left in the first. The teams then traded baskets and the score was knotted 18-18 at the first break.

St. Thomas scored the first five points of the second, but the Tars responded with a 7-0 run to take a 25-23 lead after an Ingler triple at the seven-minute mark. Rollins then slowly extended its advantage and led 38-30 at halftime.

A Bobcats score opened the third, but Daniels got the Tars back in front 40-32 with 7:37 left the quarter. That would be the Tars last bucket for nearly the next six minutes. Rienas scored a four-point play and Keiana Brooks hit from three-point range to make the score 40-39 at the 6:03 mark. STU also then went cold and ran into a five-minute scoreless streak of their own.

Jo Bistrow got the offense back on track with a three-pointer and Rollins grabbed a 45-44 lead heading into the fourth.

Rollins dug in on defense to start the final quarter and after a Rachel Jablonski three-pointer and Stone layup, the Tars led 53-44 with 6:12 to play. St. Thomas came back and three times made it a four-point game down the stretch. Jaylyn Harrison came up with a big three-pointer in the final moments, putting the Tars ahead 60-53 with 90 seconds to play. From that point, Rollins iced the win at the free throw line.

Rollins is back in action November 24-25 hosting the Tars Thanksgiving Classic at Warden Arena. The Tars meet Talladega at 12 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 24 and close the event against Caldwell at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 25. Fans can watch the action live on the Tars Sports Network at RollinsSports.com.
