WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 7, 2016) - The Tars offense came alive with a dominating performance in an 18-5 win over Ave Maria. Rollins scored early and often on their way to the victory. With the win the Tars improve to 20-14 on the season, and they stand at 5-7 in the Sunshine State Conference. The Gyrenes drop to 14-27 on the year.

Skip Kovar led the Rollins offense, after coming in for an injured Tyler Fairbanks. The senior went 2-4, tallying four RBI. Leadoff man Nick Breen went 3-4, driving in three runs and scoring one of his own.

Rollins sent six pitchers to the mound to take on Ave Maria. Brad Case started for the Tars, throwing one inning, striking out one. Philip Tahernia threw the second inning, picking up his first win of the season. Brandon Burgess threw two innings, surrendering only two hits. Whit Drennan pitched 2.2 innings, giving up five runs, striking out three. Brett Scafidi threw 1.1 frames, striking out one. Isaiah Sakany pitched a perfect ninth, striking out two, to close out the game.

Rollins got on the board first, sending six runners across in the second inning, all with two outs. Mike Dolan scored Christopher Corbett with a single. Dolan then came home on a Breen single. Thomas Boyajian and Isaiah Russell scored when Grant Ashline reached on an error by the Ave Maria second baseman. Kovar then tripled to deep centerfield, sending Breen and Ashline home.

The Tars sent another three runs across with two outs in the third. Peter Nicoletto scored on Boyajian's ground-rule double. Boyajian and Russell both tallied on a double by Breen, making the score 9-0 after three frames.

Rollins waited until the sixth inning to extend their lead again. Ashline started the scoring, crossing the plate after a Mike Purcell single. Nicoletto then singled home Purcell with a shot to right field. Dolan's fielder's choice scored Teddy Meissner, giving the Tars a 12-0 lead after six innings.

Ave Maria tried to mount a comeback with five runs in the seventh, but Rollins quickly squashed the attempt, responding with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Ashline singled up the middle to score Russell. Purcell hit a sacrifice fly ball that allowed Alex Miller to cross the plate. Ashline made the score 15-5 when he crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

Rollins tallied three more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. Ashline doubled home Mark Angelo, who scored his first run of the year. A Kovar single batted in Ashline and Miller to round out the scoring. Sakany controlled the ninth inning, seeing out the victory for the Tars.

Rollins will take to the field on Friday, April 8 against the Florida Southern Moccasins. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. Prior to the game the Tars will honor eight seniors for their contribution to the Rollins baseball program.
