TAMPA, Fla. (April 30, 2016) - The Rollins
softball team split Saturday's doubleheader against the University
of Tampa to complete their regular season. The Tars shutout Tampa,
3-0, in game one before falling to the Spartans in game two by a
score of 2-1.
Rollins closes out the regular season with a 37-14-1 overall
record and 17-7 in conference while Tampa goes to 18-21 this season
and 10-14 in the SSC.
Game one was scoreless until the top of the fourth when Chelsea
Reed led off with a single down the left field line. After
stealing second, Reed would score off a RBI double by Brittany
Johnson to take the 1-0 lead. Johnson then proceeded to steal
third before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Brianne
Lint to extend the Tars lead.
Despite plenty of hits from both sides, neither team would score
until the top of the seventh when Abigail
Sexton came across the plate on a Hailee
Keisling single to center field. That is all the Tars would
need as they claimed the 3-0 victory.
Grace
Street collects the win (11-3) while Niki
Fogle records the save (5). Street went 6.1 innings allowing
nine hits, no runs and no walks while striking out two.
The second contest of the day saw Tampa score first after the
Tars surrendered three singles in the bottom of the third to put
the Spartans up 1-0. Tampa added another run in the fifth after two
consecutive doubles allowed Cristina Clauberg to score which
extended Tampa's lead to 2-0.
The Tars rallied late after Courtney
Durbin led off the seventh with a double to right center. Hannah
Horwath would send an RBI double to left center to pull Rollins
to within one. Keisling then walked to put runners on first and
second, but that would be it for the Tars. Tampa got out of the
inning and secured the 2-1 win.
Fogle is credited the loss as the senior went six innings,
allowing seven hits, two runs and no walks while striking out
three.
