FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (April 16, 2016) - A
slow start doomed the Tars in a battle with the No. 25 Nova
Southeastern Sharks. NSU jumped out to an early lead before the
game was halted for a lightning delay. Rollins mounted a comeback,
but could never fight all the way back into the lead. With the
loss the Tars fall to 21-17 overall, and 6-10 in the Sunshine State
Conference. Nova Southeastern improves to 26-12, and 12-4 in SSC
action.
Nick
Breen led the Rollins offense. The leadoff man went 2-5,
including his fourth homerun of the season. Breen tallied two RBI
and scored twice for the Tars. Grant
Ashline went 2-3 recording a single and a double, and scoring
one run. Peter
Nicoletto finished the evening 1-4 with a two RBI double.
Rollins threw four pitchers at the Sharks on the evening. Brian
Auerbach started, throwing one inning, giving up seven runs and
striking out two. The sophomore picked up the loss. After the
delay Brett
Scafidi took the mound, throwing 5.2 innings, giving up four
runs and striking out four. Whit
Drennan pitched a single inning of relief, sriking out four. Anthony
Trovato came in to record the final defensive out for the
Tars.
The Sharks jumped out to a big lead in the bottom of the first
using a pair of homeruns, including a grand slam, to help build a
seven run lead. After one out in the top of the second, the teams
were forced off the field in what would become an hour and a half
lightning delay.
When the teams were finally allowed to return to the field in
was the Sharks who struck first. Another homerun, a solo shot,
extended their lead to 8-0.
The Tars got on the scoreboard in the top of the third when
Breen sent the ball soaring over left field fence, driving home Isaiah
Russell. The Tars were able to pull even closer in the top of
the fifth. Nicoletto's bases loaded doubled down the right field
line sent Ashline and Christopher
Corbett across the plate. Skip
Kovar recorded an RBI when Mike
Purcell scored on a groundout to the shortstop. Thomas
Boyajian registered the final RBI of the frame, driving in
Nicoletto with a single up the middle. Nova Southeastern responded
with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth, making the
score 11-6 after five.
Rollins pulled another run back in the sixth when Breen scored
on a Mike
Dolan single to right field, pushing the score to 11-7. That
was as close as the Tars could get, as both bullpens stifled the
opposing offenses for the final frames.
Rollins and Nova Southeastern are scheduled to conclude their
three game series with a double-header on Saturday, April 16.
First pitch of game number one is slated for 1 p.m.
