WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 6, 2016)
- The Tars captured their third strait win,
defeating the Concordia Clippers 13-2 in their third Baseball Week
contest. The win boosts Rollins' overall record to 12-6, while the
Tars stand at 1-2 in Sunshine State Conference play. Concordia
drops to 3-4 on the season.
Second baseman Nick Breen finished the day 2-4 with three RBI
and a run scored. Freshman Isaiah Russell tallied three RBI of his
own, going 1-3 from the plate. Mike Dolan hit his first homerun of
the season, a two run shot in the fifth inning.
Patrick Heuler started the game for Rollins, pitching three
innings giving up just one run on three hits. Joey Vecchione threw
three no-hit innings in relief, picking up the win. The Marlboro,
New York native struck out five batters in the effort. Brad Case
gave up one run on one hit, striking out one, in an inning of
work. Whit Drennan and Matt Hendricks each threw a perfect inning
to close out the game.
Giorgio Palmiero went 1-3 with an RBI for the Clippers. AJ
Martucci started the game for Concordia, giving up four runs on
three hits and five walks, recording the loss.
Rollins surrendered a run in the top of the fourth, but
responded with four in the bottom of the frame. Tyler Fairbanks
led-off the inning with a double before a Mike Purcell single and a
Grant Ashline walk loaded the bases. Skip Kovar came to the plate
and walked in a run. Chris Corbett scored Purcell with a sacrifice
fly. A Peter Nicoletto walk reloaded the bases before Russell and
Breen both drew walks to score two more runs.
The Tars pulled away in the fifth, scoring another five runs.
Purcell walked to lead-off the inning before Dolan stepped up and
hit the ball over the fence in left center field. A Russell single
scored Kovar, and a Breen single knocked in Russell and
Nicoletto.
Concordia pulled one run back in the top of the seventh, but
Rollins again responded, putting the game out of reach in the
bottom of the inning. Kovar opened the frame with a single and
scored on a Corbett triple. Russell grounded out, sending the
catcher across the plate. Breen singled and scored on a Fairbanks
double, and Fairbanks came in after a Purcell single.
Rollins' relief pitchers closed out the last two innings,
securing the Tars' victory.
The Tars and the Clippers will continue Baseball Week action on
Monday, March 7. The game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
